Citizens of Michigan’s Fifth Congressional District elected Gerald Ford to his first term in the House of Representatives 70 years ago today on November 2, 1948.
Ford had run a successful primary campaign against incumbent Bartel Jonkman in September, winning the Republican nomination with over 60% of the vote. He defeated Democrat Fred Barr in the general election by a similar margin. Voters in western Michigan would reelect Ford as their Representative 11 times.

Gaslights gleamed through the fog, and citizens rolled-up their trousers and plowed the muddy streets in search of news. At eight o’clock umbrellas bobbed outside clubrooms and hotels. Men sheltered and stayed dry rather than brawl. For now, the weather maintained the peace. Parker’s Hall and the Union League packed with partisans eager to hear the 1864 election returns, but the storm delayed telegrams.
