Drinking with Gunnarr had been a better stress relief than he’d expected, considering that there had been a time that drinking with Vikings was highly likely to end in someone’s death. But he wasn’t at war here, so he had let himself enjoy the company of a man who was supposed to be his enemy. Despite being on opposite sides, the two had shared war stories, drinking and joking, but Gunnarr’s attention had been stolen by a pretty woman. Not blaming him at all, James had excused himself and made his way back up the castle.
Although he was most certainly drunk, he did not stagger, not until he saw a familiar woman tucked into an alcove. “Eleonora!” He rushed to her side, hands going to her shoulders, afraid he’d see an injury. It took a moment for him to notice the slow rise and fall of her chest. She was asleep. His fear turned into amusement, shaking her awake more gently now. “Come on, sleeping beauty.” He teased, his hand cupping her cheek as her eyes opened. “There you are. You gave me a scare.”
