Two views under the 9th Avenue el at 89th Street, showing the rapid development that took place along the line from 1879 (top) to 1889 (bottom).

Interestingly, these views were circulated in promotional materials by the Queens Borough Chamber of Commerce (in Queens Borough, New York City, 1910-1920) to demonstrate how quickly development might be expected to occur along the Flushing and Astoria lines.

A Dutch train crashed off an elevated railway and instead of plunging to the ground it was propped up by a huge sculpture of a whale's tail. Come on, reality, how the hell do you expect me to take you seriously?
