it truly baffles me when people are like super super gentle and cautious with their big dogs. they can’t even feel the attention you’re giving them if you’re petting really lightly. I get it if it’s an old dog or you’re teaching a child to be gentle with animals but like? if it’s an adult goldie, saint bernard, or mastiff or whatever, those guys LOVE rough affection. especially the double-coated breeds. my mom’s german shepherd’s favourite thing in the world is being used like a bongo drum. I had a big male newfoundland as a kid with more fur than body and I could ride him like a pony until I was five. I’d squeeze him as hard as I could and his tail would wag the whole time because he was getting attention.

when i was a kid, my grandpa would cut apples for me. he’d use a pocketknife, and he’d cut it so i got the best pieces, and he’d tell me stories as we ate. before him, his granddad would cut pears for him straight from the tree, and he’d eat it the same way i did. piece by carefully sliced piece, from his grandpa’s hands, in the yard or living room or on the porch, not caring about anything but how juicy the fruit is, and it’s so juicy.

now, i carry a pocketknife, and i cut fruit for my cousins and my friends and the kids i babysit. i tell them my own stories, and they eat the apples, and we’re both at home, loved and special, juice on our fingers.

sometimes I like to mess with peoples heads, like, just a little bit. like when I was 13 I convinced my cousin (age 12) that chicken nuggets were actually made with turkey meat. and when I was still 13 I convinced my brother (8) that our uncle worked for a secret branch of the government dedicated to putting microchips in every single cow but he couldn’t tell anyone about his real job (microchipping cows in the dead of night) so he said he was a banker. I think my cousin still believes the thing about chicken nuggets
