The colors of this illustration are muted, which is irregular for paintings. Usually, the artists would play with contrast, and it tends to be one of the key controls to apply in order to create a good visual. In this case, the painting seems to be dull. However, by reducing the attention to the contrast and concentrating on the subtle differences in color, we get another accent, which appeals to the eye.
The shades at first seem to be similar. But the color sections are not just plain color, they have color gradations as well, and bright accents. All of which sophisticated the image. It is driven by the exploration of shades and how they could be compiled in a way to still portray an image clearly, but without outlines, dark shadows and highlights.
