A small miracle existed in the park: he couldn’t feel the fear or the danger that had been a dull hum over the last few weeks, ever since they’d found the book.
And another miracle: when he turned his head to look at her, he found her looking back.
Eliot drove slower on the way back. The night wasn’t screaming so loudly in his ears, and he turned the music down so it was more melodic and less thumping. He ate his crisps and drank his soda and hated every single second of the land that rolled past his windows. When he parked in front of his flat and locked his car, the city was exhausted familiarity. Eliot’s mouth tasted of all the dreams he’d longed for and ruined.
