“I’ll be back in five days.”
David sighed and kept his eyes focused on how Eli’s hands were holding his own. He hated that he was being such a mope about the whole ordeal.
“Not even a whole week,” Eli reasoned. “You won’t even notice that I’m gone.”
“I know.” David smiled up Eli. David felt Tommy before he ever saw him. Air rushed past his face as Tommy planted a kiss on Eli’s cheek.
“I packed your bag, rolled your clothes like a grandpa so nothing would get wrinkles,” Tommy said. He rolled his eyes as his hands landed on David’s elbow and Eli’s back. “I swear, you’re like forty years old already.”
Eli’s grin was bright. “Thanks. When Grams tells me how nice I look I’ll tell her it’s all thanks to you.”
David wanted to meet Eli’s extended family. Tommy had gone to Arizona a few times to see them, but scheduling vacation was hard for David after the whole six month leave with no prior warning. One day David would make it down there.
Eli’s great grandmother was turning ninety so the whole family was going down to celebrate. David was happy that Eli would be getting to see his family, but five days without him was going to drag by. Especially for Tommy.
“I’m going to wrap the gifts, stop standing around and do some stuff. Your flight leaves in three hours!” David blinked and Tommy was already gone. While he’s been putting up a positive front, the speedster’s complete lack of walking in the last three days gave Tommy away. Something in the back of David’s mind told him he wasn’t just being silly for worrying about the next week. Work was stressing David out more then normal lately, and something was bugging Tommy but he hasn’t decided to tell them what it is. It really didn’t help that David just missed Eli at the thought of him going on a trip by himself.
Eli let go of David’s hands and cupped his face. “Hey. It’ll go by fast-”
“-not fast enough for Tommy.”
Eli rolled his eyes. “Nothing is fast enough for Tommy, but it’s gonna be fine. Just promise me you’ll watch out for him. He’s been acting weird.”
David nodded, turning his face to kiss the palm of Eli’s hand. “He hasn’t been sleeping much.”
“I’ve noticed that, too.”
“Sure you don’t want us to drop you off at the airport?” David offered.
“You know Tee isn’t allowed at airports,” Eli drawled. He made David look at him again and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. “You’ve been pretty down recently, it’s not just Tommy. You guys going to be okay?”
Eli’s smile shrunk a little and David shook his head fiercely. “Oh my God, we’ll be fine. Go on your trip! Leave, we don’t need you here mothering us,” David said and he was grinning so much his face hurt. His fingers twisted into the hem of Eli’s shirt comfortably.
“Getting all sappy without me?” Tommy asked from behind David.
David didn’t feel like moving. He just kept grinning at Eli while warm hands slid down to his neck. “Yeah. Eli thinks he needs to get us a babysitter, though. He’s worried we won’t be able to take care of ourselves,” David teased.
Tommy scoffed. “Please, you’re the definition of responsible. When used as a verb, you’re just a buzz kill.”
Eli rolled his eyes and kissed David for real. David was going to miss those kisses all week long, and he already had plans for when Eli finally got back home. “Babe, you think everyone is a buzz kill,” Eli said as he moved over to kiss Tommy as well. “Take care of David,” Eli muttered and kissed Tommy again.
“Jeez, mom, I’ll try.” Tommy grinned and kissed Eli’s cheek as he handed over the suitcase. The speedster moved to David’s side, still a little too fast, but the movement wasn’t too jolting.
Eli was out the door without much more fuss and it was only David and Tommy left in apartment. The settled for a semi-quiet evening at home and Chinese delivery. Tommy may have tried to start a new career as a stripper between the egg rolls and the start of the movie, but that was just a normal Thursday night at their place.

It was weird when the bed wasn’t full. Eli normally slept in the middle so the gap he left behind felt wide and endless. David watched Tommy’s face as the speedster slept and sleepily admired how pretty his boyfriend was. He scooted a little closer and softly pulled Tommy’s hand into his as he closed his eyes for sleep.
When David woke up next he wasn’t sure where he was. He was steadily rocking and it almost felt like he’d fallen asleep on the jet. Opening his eyes revealed that the room was dark, but he could see the closet door to his bedroom and quickly his mind cleared of the confusion.
“Tommy?” he said softly, turning over to his other side to find where Tommy had gone.
Tommy was still asleep but his body was jerking now and then, his once peaceful expression changed to one of distress. David turned on the bedside lamp as he sat up. “Tommy? Wake up.”
White hair clung to Tommy’s face as sweat made his skin shiny. He was muttering under his breath and David didn’t need to hear what he was saying to know what dream he was having. The bed rocked again and David swallowed a lump on his throat.
Normally, Eli was the first responder to nightmares. Tommy had a habit of coming up swinging, so David normally went to find water and a damp wash rag while Eli woke Tommy up.
“Tommy, wake up. You’re dreaming,” David said firmly, his voice still soft in the quiet room. He slid a hand over one of Tommy’s balled up fists and squeezed softly. “Baby you got to wake up,” David murmured.
Tommy continued to jerk and twitch now and then, his eyes moving faster then David could track behind his closed eyelids. “Tommy, come on, wake up,” he said a bit louder, gently shaking the other boy’s arm.
Tommy bolted upright in bed, and David fell backwards to avoid getting head butted. Tommy was panting, his eyes searching the room before they settled on David, wide and startled. David still had a hand wrapped around Tommy’s forearm. The grip was firm but easily breakable. He would ground Tommy but never keep him.
Silence filled the room again as they stared at one another, Tommy’s breathing quickly returning to normal. The speedster suddenly started sucking in deep breaths again and pulled away from David as he shot off the bed and into the bathroom.
David sat quietly on the bed until he could no longer hear Tommy retching any longer. “Want me to come in there, or do you want to come back to bed?” David called. He figured Tommy wasn’t ready to move from the cool tile just yet, but he knew better then to trap him within the bathroom. Whatever Tommy said was to mumbled for David to understand, so he figured that was a sign he could go sit with him in the bathroom. “Don’t run off on me, okay?” David called. He rummaged through the bed side table and found a pack of gum.
“Don’t have to be a dick,” Tommy called.
“Yes I do,” David said softly as he stepped into the bathroom. He grabbed a wash cloth and ran it under cold water at the sink before wringing it out.
With a groan David managed to get down to the floor beside Tommy, their backs against the wall and the toilet in front of them. “Here,” David whispered as he folded the rag and placed it over the back of Tommy’s neck. He handed him a stick up gum.
“Thank you,” Tommy said quietly, his voice small as he slowly unwrapped the gum and popped it into his mouth. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be.” David place a hand carefully against Tommy’s damp hair and pulled him closer. He pressed a kiss to Tommy’s temple and sighed. “It’s not like anything got broke. We can’t control dreams. I’m just sorry I’m not better at all of this.” David waved his hand around, gesturing to the room at large.
Tommy leaned into David’s shoulder and hummed. “You’re not so bad. I mean I didn’t blow anything up, so that’s a win in my books.”
They sat in the floor for until David couldn’t feel his butt any long. “Want to take a shower? I’ll wash your hair for you.”
Tommy grinned up at him, far too exhausted to try and spin his words into something sexual. “That would be really nice.”
