Though happy to be back in Brooklyn just in time for the peak of autumn, I miss my studio at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts in Nebraska. My fully funded, four-week residency there was devoted to experimenting with new directions in work. The place’s rural quietness was a catalyst for this kind of focus, and the time in the studio flew by.
While at the KHN Center, my main goal was to research a new photographic process and its relevant materials. The process creates a physical overlay effect similar to that of the Woven Portraits. (I’ll post more about this later.) Also, I worked on a few side projects related to physical overlay that involved more conservative materials, and I volunteer taught three portrait workshops at the local high schools.
The KHN Center administrators, Pat Friedli and Elizabeth Stehling, were more than accommodating. And my great co-residents, who arrived and departed on a rolling basis, provided creative camaraderie as well as partnership in consuming many $1.99 margaritas and $1.00 beers at nearby establishments.
