Sea birds greeted the dawn as the cold wind shifted just a hair east. Elldys's mind already calculated the degree in which to adjust the helm, spokes worn smooth from years of practice.
Ahead, not quite in view a shoreline loomed, mist drenched waves breaking on rock hard enough she could almost hear it, they were still hours away, but the sea moved under the hull in the direction of the tide. It was subtle, but a good captain knew it.
Her crew, a mismatched breed of bad and good, waited like those sea birds, anticipation hung in heavy air. They went on with their duties but eyes followed that subtle tide inwards to shore.
Prisons were always such a mess to break into but the Serpent's Rise crew knew better then some. They'd broken into three, each retrieval successful, each wall breached when guards never expect more then illiterate ruffians from pirates.
"Steady Lass..." Captain Harrow's tattooed fingers ran over the honey colored spoke, aether shot and sparked from the lines embedded into her skin. She hummed as they pushed forward.
This build, this anticipation.
This is what they lived for.
