#AlbertEinstein, one of the greatest physicists of all time, was born on this day in 1879. At the age of five Einstein received a compass from his father and grew fascinated by the fact that no matter which way he turned the compass, the needle always pointed the same direction. This was his introduction to scientific inquiry. Ellen Driscoll’s (@driscoll1953) “As Above, So Below” (1998) pays tribute to Einstein and this influential device, emphasizing cardinal directions used for navigation and geographic orientation. The artwork, made of mosaic, bronze, and glass reliefs, is installed in 11 locations throughout Grand Central Terminal’s NE & NW passageways, connecting thematically to the famous starry ceiling of the Main Concourse. Embedded into the walls of this bustling transit station at the center of New York City, the work brings spiritual and worldly elements into view as we navigate our own directions.
