There was something that the idea ofpossessing ‘strength’ above others did to one’s mind. Though he had never been the type to crave power in any form, having it placed in his hands as an unexpected twist of luck stirred at the innate instinct that craved for sheer dominance which had been previously suppressed by carefully taught morals and social expectations. Thought and reservation decreased exponentially as the confidence he carried heavy above his armor grew thicker than the layer of physical protection itself. Missions which had been a burden, anxiety weaving through sleepless nights transformed into automatic routines of letters on paper, crimson crusted underneath his nails. It wasn’t that he hadn’t been harmed in his endeavors – from the thin line drawn over his left temple, the odd crook of his middle finger down to marred ankles. Yet the repeated memory of pain had bred endurance than fear, the dull trigger of revenge over an acknowledgement of the power of his opponents.
Clouds of dust coiled at his feet as he trudged through the alleyways which had reported recent rebel activity, only the sound of his own feet dragging against fragmented concrete bouncing off of the brick walls. He had wished for a tracking task rather than patrol as the act of tracing steps for a set purpose had always been infinitely more attractive than aimlessly knitting through what ended mostly in empty streets.
Then he saw it – the glimpse of a shadow flickering against the walls a few feet away and that odd glint of light shattering in front of a metallic barrier. It was instinct that led him to lower his position, feet treading carefully to breach the distance to catch a closer look. His eyes started from the tip of her hair which seemed to be a common hue, and yet eyes slid over the clothing wrapped round her back, how there seemed to a lack of warmth underneath. Upon resting his eyes on metallic fingertips, his hand slid gently down to the dagger strapped to the side of his calf, calves contracting in the intense effort of maintaining his silence before he lunged the short distance, hand clasping over the mutant’s mouth as he pressed the blade over the pulse running wild under thin layer of skin-
There was definitely something wrong, the skin underneath his fingers covering the other’s face encountering a hard surface, the blade screeching against the metal as he pressed upon it with sheer strength, the edges fracturing over the impenetrable metal. Short curses slipped through pale lips as he detached himself from the female, repositioning himself to come in face a mutant he had never seen on profiles nor suspects, taking in every inch of her so visible mutation. This time it was the hint of desperation with which he lunged towards the other once more, driving her form against the wall as his fist slammed into the side of her face, cringing as the layer of skin covering his knuckles gave way to the impact. Things turned a blur as his assaults continued – too much of a blur that he failed to recognize the fact that the majority of the harm had been imposed on himself whilst the woman he had cornered had yet to resist against his actions.
