My finished bugs! For being my first true attempt at free motion embroidery, I’m pretty pleased, but there’s definitely room for improvement. I’m still experiencing a bit of thread breakage on the back, but it’s getting better, and I’m loving how expressive and painterly this technique is.

My latest embroidered bug, the garden tiger moth. A grand mash of bright colors and patterns. Made with combination of hand embroidery and free motion embroidery, which is a non-digitized, entirely hand guided machine embroidery technique.

Finally here are some finished photos of the virgin tiger moth (Grammia virgo) I made!Embroidered on ivory silk, this moth is a combination of free motion embroidery and hand embroidery. The body is made with a hand embroidery technique called turkey work, and results in fluffy, plush pile you can trim to shape. The antennae are made of feathers. Probably the most obsessively detailed embroidery I’ve ever done and I’m currently thinking about who I’m going to embroider next!

So, for the new year I decided to teach myself to sew in a new way using the free motion foot on my sewing machine! It is very different from my usual way of doing things, and only yesterday did I feel I made something well enough to actually show! I taught myself to embroider on a sewing machine over ten years ago just using the regular foot, with feed dogs up, giving me a lot of control over my stitches, but not a whole lot of capability to do expressive line work. Using this new technique takes away a lot of the control allowing me to go up, down, and side-to-side without constraints. It’s a little like biking without training wheels. The sewing stitches are more irregular, organic, and expressive.
These little bugs (weevils… aren’t their long snouts cute?) are by no means perfect, I’m still getting the hang of controlling stitch length myself, and I still get thread breakage from tension issues, but I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere… which is a great feeling after making tons of kiddie scratch.
