hi!! im super glad i found this blog i think it might be my favorite now😭there are SO many cool creatures on here and i really appreciate that youre bringing them to light!!

i hope you dont mind if i ask this, but do you have anything on crustaceans?? theyre some of my favorite animals!

When I found this Pacific Sand Crab (Emerita analoga) on an Oregon beach I had no clue what it was. Well, I had some idea that it was a crustacean of some sort but that was the extent of it. This one must have been injured or had something wrong with it because it was just hanging out on the surface of the sand. Normal behavior would have been for it to burrow backwards below the surface to hide. They live in the swash zone, the area of the beach washed by a wave after it has broken. There they hang out just beneath the surface of the sand where they snag food with their antennae that they pull back down to scrape into their mouth. They, in turn, are preyed upon by shorebirds, fish and sea otters.

i had a marine bio field trip senior year of high school in which our entire goal was to look at and collect data on pacific mole crabs! i know u were talking about atlantic ones but metaphorically i am shaking ur hand about mole crab appreciation stuff in general :)

Sand Flea - June 2021 My daughter-in-law, Julie, was searching for shells at the edge of the surf using a long-handled wire basket when she scooped up a sand flea. She didn’t know what it was and asked me. I knew it was a sand flea but didn’t know much else about it. A quick internet search told me this was an Emerita, also known as a Sand Flea, Mole Crab, Sand Crab or Sand Bug. It also told me that the red things visible in images three and four are eggs, so this is a female. Image two is a clear image of the Mole Crab in Julie’s basket. Image one is actually after we put the Sand Flea back down on the sand. They stay right at the edge of the waves and have to move as the tide comes in and out. That’s why Julie caught it. I had my camera ready as Julie dropped the Crab/Flea back onto the sand so I was able to capture this image. The Sand Flea was back under the sand before I could get a second shot. MWM
