Experimenting in the Kitchen, Instead of the Bedroom, Can Sometimes be Good for a Relationship
A present for @emetoandotherthings from @lickstynine
I’ve been toiling over the plot of this for all of November, and I’m honestly still horrifically insecure about it. Writing other people’s characters makes me intensely anxious; I’m always afraid I can’t do them justice. Especially in your case - you’re one of the best writers I know, so you set the bar super high for any story about your characters. But I did my very best because you’re my very best friend, so here’s an indulgent little drabble-bordering-on-fic.
Merry Christmas, and remember you’re the Besther,
“Fuck me, it’s bloody freezing outside!” Jude gasped, shoving the front door shut against a gust of wind. His face was flushed from the cold, and his teeth were chattering loudly, but he beamed proudly as he dropped shopping bags onto the ground in the entryway.
Eden stepped out of the kitchen, dusting flour off his hands. “Looks like it. Did you at least get all the stuff for your class Christmas party?”
Jude nodded, discarding his frost-crusted jacket and adding his gloves and scarves to the pile. “Yea! I got plates, napkins, candy, glitter, cardstock, and markers. We’re gonna have the kids make Christmas cards for their parents.”
“I’m sure whatever you do, it’ll be brilliant.” Eden smiled warmly and pressed a kiss onto Jude’s flushed cheek. “Are you hungry?”
“I’m starving!” The brunette lamented, pouting dramatically as he looked up at Eden. “What have you baked?” He asked, having smelled the rich, sweet aroma wafting from the kitchen.
Eden led his boyfriend to the kitchen, gesturing to the counters filled with cookies and cupcakes. “Everything. I promised I’d bring sweets for everyone in the labs, I wanted to have enough variety…” He left out the part where he’d mostly just been baking as a stress relief. The holiday party at the lab was a nice excuse, but he also needed to blow off steam. Christmas was a stressful time of year, and his anxiety had only been getting worse over the past few days. Luckily, spending the day making sweets had helped him to calm down some, and his boyfriend’s return improved Eden’s mood as well. “I was hoping you’d taste test for me, make sure it all turned out.”
Jude grinned like a child that got a pony for Christmas. All he’d eaten today was a mediocre takeout sandwich nearly seven hours before, and the sight of delicious treats was only amplifying his hunger. He hurried to grab a plate, piling it high with an assortment of cupcakes, cookies, and other baked goods. Sitting down at the table, he started to dig in, his smile only growing at the taste of Eden’s top-notch baking. “It’s good! It’s so good…”
Eden’s cheeks pinkened faintly, and a genuine smile tugged at his lips. He brushed a few loose strands of hair from his face, washing his hands before returning to the bowl of batter on the counter. “I’m actually not done, so I hope you don’t have any plans for the evening.”
“I could eat your baking ‘til I died. I’ll stay up all night if you need it.” Jude enthused, continuing to stuff his face with cookies and brownies. He went after the cupcakes last, sucking them down as fast as he could peel off the wrappers. The sweets were being devoured so quickly, he could barely discern one flavor from another. Though his stomach was growing full, he was still craving the taste of sugar, and Jude didn’t want to let his boyfriend down. He rubbed discreetly at his growing belly, trying to ignore the burbling of his gut as it struggled to digest so many sweets.
Eden appeared at his side, offering an assortment of fresh cookies to taste. “Eat up. I’ve got two more batches of cupcakes baking, then we’ll be done. Is everything good so far?”
Jude nodded, swallowing thickly to get the last remnants of chocolate out of his mouth. “Of course. You’re a great baker.” He grabbed a cookie from the new plate, taking a bite before asking, “What flavours are the last cupcakes?”
“Vanilla and chocolate. Those sets are vegan, I wanted to have options for everyone.”
“Of course.” The thoughtfulness brought a smile to Jude’s face, and he slowed his eating to gaze up at Eden for a moment. Though they had been together a good while now, he would never cease to be pleased by the sight of his boyfriend. The light from the kitchen cast a gold glow on Eden’s curls, and his cheeks had a soft ruddiness from working by the heat of the oven. A sappy grin spread across Jude’s face, and he munched quietly, watching Eden shuffle back into the kitchen to start straightening up, his long, nimble fingers piling dishes into the sink to wash.
Jude grew distracted as his belly turned again. He paused his cookie eating to palm his swollen stomach, which had gone from feeling overfull to downright queasy. Maybe he should lay off the sweets, he thought. But how could he disappoint Eden? There were still more cookies on the plate, and cupcakes in the oven. If Jude didn’t eat them, poor insecure Eden would assume they were bad. Jude couldn’t let down his boyfriend like that. Swallowing the nauseous gurgle rising in his throat, he picked up the half-eaten cookie from his plate, finishing it and forcing himself to bite into the next one.
By the time Eden returned with cupcakes, Jude was miserably nauseous. He’d just forced down the last cookie a moment ago, and the idea of putting any more food in his stomach made his belly groan in protest. Forcing a smile, he murmured a quick thanks, squeezing Eden’s hand before the blond left to finish cleaning the kitchen.
Peeling at the cupcake wrappers, Jude wondered if there was anyway he could hide the two cakes in his napkin. The gurgling in his belly was only growing angrier, and it took all his willpower to bring the vanilla cupcake up to his lips. Overpowered by the sugary rush of frosting, Jude gagged, dropping the cupcake to clamp a hand over his mouth. His stomach lurched, threatening to send a wave of sick all over the table, and he barely swallowed it down. Scrambling to his feet, Jude bolted to the bathroom, ignoring the concerned voice of Eden behind him.
“Jude? Are you alright?” Eden stuck his head into the bathroom just in time to hear a noisy retch. Jude was slouched over the toilet, gagging and belching as his stomach expelled wave after wave of sugary vomit. Cringing sympathetically, Eden hurried over, kneeling down to rub his boyfriend’s back.
Jude moaned in discomfort, leaning back against Eden during a brief reprieve. “Ede? I don’t think I can finish the sweets.”
“Oh honey, of course not.” A wave of guilt washed over Eden as he came to a realization. “You didn’t have to eat all that…”
“I wanted to try it all.” Jude mumbled, burying his face in the crook of Eden’s neck. “You asked me to.”
Guilt hung heavy in Eden’s voice. “I’m sorry, Jude. I really am. I didn’t mean to make you feel pressured.” he held his boyfriend close, brushing Jude’s sweat-soaked fringe from his forehead.
“It’s not your - urp!” Jude pulled away, leaning back over the toilet bowl as a queasy belch brought up more sick. Eden kept an arm around him for support, rubbing Jude’s back with his other hand.
“That’s it, get it up.” Eden coaxed, “You’ll feel better when you’re done.”
Jude continued to puke for several minutes, heaving weakly as his stomach forced up the last of its contents. Eden’s fingers traced gently up and down Jude’s spine, and he waited patiently to ensure his boyfriend was done vomiting. When Jude finally settled, Eden grabbed a square of toilet paper, wiping Jude’s mouth and flushing the toilet.
“Come on, let’s get you to bed,” He murmured, helping the shaky brunette to his feet. They shuffled slowly down the hall, and once in their room, Eden eased Jude into bed. “I’m going to get some water, okay, sweetie?”
“Mmhm…” Jude nodded, gingerly curling up on his side, lifting his shirt to nurse his aching belly. He looked up as Eden returned, smiling weakly as his boyfriend crawled into bed with him.
“Slow sips.” Eden instructed, holding a water bottle to Jude’s lips. Once he had coaxed a bit of water into his boyfriend, he set the bottle aside, cozying up with Jude. “Would you like me to rub your belly?”
Jude’s eyes fluttered open, wide and delighted as he gazed at Eden. “Yes, please!” He rolled onto his back to expose his aching stomach, still slightly bloated from his foolish overstuffing.
Eden rested a hand against the warm, sensitive flesh, rubbing in slow, gentle circles. Sighing contently, Jude closed his eyes, relaxing as the turmoil in his belly started to fade. He yawned softly, pressing closer to Eden as he started to doze off. Eden smiled, kissing Jude’s forehead before murmuring a quiet goodnight. Though he still felt guilty for making Jude ill, Eden couldn’t help but feel flattered by tonight’s events. Jude cared more about Eden’s feelings than his own health and comfort. Though he wasn’t sure what he’d done to deserve it, Eden was immensely grateful to have such a good boyfriend.
