This is exactly what she wanted. The dream she’d had of dancing around the palace in a fancy dress was fulfilled. She should be jumping for joy. Instead, she felt like an outsider as she continued with all the surface level conversations. Maybe on the outside she looked comfortable but on the inside she was a bundle of nerves and anxiety. Perhaps that’s why she broke one of her only rules, grabbing a flute of champagne and taking a long sip.
When she was young she used to drink and party the night away but it’d been years since she’d even touched a glass of anything. Back in the day it’d been fun and she’d been happy but at the time she didn’t have a plan. She’d lived only for the present. Nowadays, she hardly ever did anything for herself. Instead, all her attention was focused on the future.
Still, there were some joys left in her life. One of which was her friendship with the young princess who was looking quite miserable at the moment. Jeanne walked over, a grin on her face as she passed her the glass of champagne. “It looks like you need this more than me,” she joked. “Everything okay?”
