Emily grew up in a very traditional but also very loving working class family, she's a few months older than Julius. She first met Julius when they were children at church, however they'd never spoken prior to Julius approaching her when they were both 16. I cannot stress enough that Emily was fully unaware Julius was gay and she never took any advantage of him; Julius was in reality the one who was abusive and just using her.
Emily left her family behind to immigrate to America with Julius in spring of 1893, shortly after marriage. She didn't really have any mental health issues prior until the fall of 1893 (slightly under a year into her marriage to Julius). The abuse from Julius started after their first child was born. To say Emily was confused was an understatement, Julius was always so loving and sweet ... she'd never even considered it a possibility it was nothing more than a mask.
As time went on, Julius would continue to become increasingly violent and abusive towards her. She convinced herself it was just due to the drinking and drugs Julius was using, and all the stress from working so much. She understandably fell into a deep depression and began drinking as well as a way to cope.
Her drinking and depression got a lot worse after Claire, her best friend (and Killian's wife at the time) died during childbirth. Emily was completely alone. She tried to spend time with Annabella, her sister in law, but she couldn't talk to Annabella honestly about the relationship the way she did with Claire. She became extremely isolated.
She eventually died roughly a decade after Julius did, and by that point, she was utterly non functional, had caused the four children irreversible damage, and was beyond redemption. Octavian was 15 when he snapped and decided to simply make the issue of her "go away." (He killed her).
