Emily Piper
Sometimes, she thinks, she can see the embers sparking under her nails as she drags them across soft skin, or cold stone.
If you catch her eyes in the right light, you might see more than the reflection of the flames. You’ll see them start to become the flames themselves. You might notice that there's no fire at all for them to reflect, but it's there anyway.
Sometimes, she wonders if anyone else notices the flames licking at her skin, crawling up her spine; feels the heat around her, radiating from her, like she does. If they can feel the primal, consuming fire that’s always hovering just under her skin.
And she can always tell the exact instant that she sets someone else on fire, for better or worse. She can see the flames transfer, watch them begin to burn, and wonder if they know it, too. Some of them can handle it. Learn to adapt, can handle the heat, the ones that are already burning themselves. Some quench it. Some are set ablaze and burned up like a long extinct sun.
But at least she can say she’s never afraid of getting burned.
She’s already burning.
Pretense.
While it’s not necessarily a good thing, Em can be the queen of pretense. She learned very quickly after her father died how to make it in this new, big, scary world, surrounded by people who didn’t care about her like he did. She learned fast how to appear fine when she needed to be, to lie to make her way, to get what she wanted or needed by acting a certain way or saying the right thing.Especially later at school, she fine-tunes the process of acting the right way around the right people to her benefit. There are few people she never feels the need to be anything but herself with, so to those who don’t know her well, she can seem contradictory, confusing, even two-faced.
It’s simply a survival tactic she adopted way too early.
I want to say "torture" but that's probably weird so epiphany? Monster? Delirious? Idk, you pick one of those.
I’d be really tempted to go with torture too but uh, that could get real dark and possibly triggery really fast so…
Emily was never scared of monsters. Vampires, werewolves, boogeymen…they were all just things in her imagination. Just creatures in books and movies that might temporarily spook her, but in no time she was back in the real world where they didn’t exist, and her dad would reassure her they couldn’t get her. She learned fast, and very quickly had no fear.
She was never scared of monsters, until she moved in with Uncle, and she had to learn about a whole different kind of monster she was never prepared for.
50. I was born under a full moon.
49. One of the only places, however, that I really really want to visit, is India.
