Emmanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma Tackle Third Movement of Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 3
- “Always a thrill,” Ax says
After playing with Beethoven on camera in an empty performance space, Yo-Yo Ma is frozen in a lunge position, facing his musical compatriot Emmanuel Ax.
“It’s always a thrill to play that piece,” Ax says.
That piece is the First Movement of Beethoven’s Cello Sonata No. 3, which pianist Ax and cellist Ma render with the fullness of a quartet or chamber orchestra as they navigate peaks and valleys; passages of high volume and near silences.
“Beethoven is a master of suspense,” Ma said in releasing the duo performance. It illustrates Ax and Ma’s ability to interpret and modernize the music without losing sight - or sound - of the centuries-old composition, which runs nearly a quarter-hour in this audio-visual setting.

a thing that lives in my head rent-free
I once heard famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma refer to his friend and collaborator, pianist Emmanuel Ax, as "Manny the Ax".

Album Review: Yo-Yo Ma, Emmanuel Ax & Leonidas Kavakos - Beethoven for Three: Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale” and Op. 1, No. 3
The miraculous thing about Yo-Yo Ma, Emmanuel Ax & Leonidas Kavakos’ latest Beethoven for Three LP is they make listeners believe ol’ Ludwig was writing specifically for them.
This is ludicrous, of course. Beethoven’s been dead since 1827 and Ma, Ax and Kavakos were born in the 20th century. Yet, the trio’s renderings of Symphony No. 6 in F Major “Pastorale” and Piano Trio No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 1, No. 3 nevertheless make a convincing case the composer was thinking of Ma’s cello, Ax’s piano and Kavakos’ violin when he put feather-dipped-in-ink to paper.
And when the Three - with Ax in the lead - channel the sweeping drama of a massive orchestra on Movement IV. “The Storm,” they validate the less-is-sometimes-more philosophy.
That written, more is more on the Piano Trio as the diversity of instrumentation adds unexpected color and nuance to the piece.
This is the second - Symphonies Nos. 2 and 5 was released earlier this year - in a series of unspecified length. Assuming the quality remains at this level, Beethoven for Three should continue for as long as Ma, Ax and Kavakos desire.

Song Review: Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Leonidas Kavakos - “Piano Trio No. 3 in C Minor, Op. 1, No. 3: II. Andante cantabile con variazioni”
Beethoven’s “Piano Trio” becomes a cello-piano-and-violin concerto when Yo-Yo Ma, Emanuel Ax and Leonidas Kavakos set their instruments to it.
A piece of the piece - “Andante cantabile con variazioni” - is out to preview the trio’s next Beethoven for Three release, Symphony No. 6 “Pastorale” and Op. 1, No. 3, arriving Nov. 11.
It is, of course, exceptional, even as it turns Beethoven over and sets him on his head. Pianist Ax is, also of course, the pre-eminent voice in this excerpt. But Ma and Kavakos provide essential accompaniment marking yet another remarkable collaboration for this international triad of modern classical giants.
