A small splash of light crept between the curtains, spilling across the room in a soft beam that fell upon the carpeted floor.
Two pairs of shoes rested by the door, one pair of smart leather brogues, neatly aligned side by side and one pair of golden heels, erratically strewn as if they had been kicked from the owner’s feet. The silken blue of a ball dress adorned the carpet just beyond the shoes and was soon accompanied by a considerably crumpled looking black shirt.
As the morning drifted onwards the light pooled wider, illuminating the young couple upon the bed. Intertwined limbs lay still and peaceful atop the lush mattress and the only movement was the steady rise and fall of their sleeping chests.
The young man’s lips were slightly parted and a happy glow had settled across his flushed cheeks, his arms encircled his companion’s waist tightly and she, in turn, was pressed close against his chest, fingers gracing the side of his neck.
As the light grew in intensity the couple began to stir. The boy was the first to open his eyes he did so with very little movement. At first his eyes flitted towards the window, as if searching for the source of his awakening and then they very swiftly came upon the face of the young lady in his arms. He could hardly control the smile that possessed him then and it was at that moment that she herself woke up. “Good morning, blossom.” She smiled into his chest at this, still too fresh from slumber to speak in return. Carefully, he caught her chin with his finger tips and tilted her face towards his.
For a moment, they did nothing more than stare into each other’s eyes but after a few seconds had passed she closed the distance and placed a soft kiss upon his lips. “It took you long enough, Ramsford.” He laughed loudly and pushed her back, climbing on top of her as they tussled. “You shall address me properly, My Lady, else I will have to set Bertrand upon you!” The pair laughed louder as she began to tickle the young lord playfully, kissing his neck. Maxwell had just begun another taunt when she quickly pressed a finger to his lips. He began to protest but when he saw the look of concentration on her face and he began to listen too. Footsteps. He swore and rolled of the bed, catching himself before he hit the floor and began scrambling around the room, throwing his crumpled shirt on and hopping on one leg as he tried to pull on his shoes. He could hear the footsteps getting closer and whirled back to face the bed. Upon seeing the panic on the young woman’s face he bounded back to her. “Maxwell!” She exclaimed in a hushed whisper. “I’m going! Stop worrying so much.” She looked at him, leaning over her with his shirt open to his chest and hair dishevelled, that grin plastered wide across his face and she couldn’t help it. She hooked her fingers into his collar and pulled him into a kiss that took him by surprise. They began to deepen the kiss and almost became carried away before they were interrupted by a sharp rap upon the door. “My Lady.” Bertrand’s voice rang clearly through the thick woodwork. “May I enter?” With one last grin Maxwell pulled away and bounded for the window, winking back at her as he ducked out onto the balcony behind, slipping out of sight just as the door swung open and the elder Duke of Ramsford entered the room.
He quickly became flustered as he saw that she was still in her bedsheets and he averted his gaze. “Apologies, my Lady, but you really should be ready by now. Quite frankly I am shocked that you think it is acceptable to lie in this long on the day of the Coronation Ball! We have much to prepare.” His frown settled even deeper into his stern features. “Now if you will excuse me, I need to find my insubordinate brother. He appears to be absent from his chamber.”

It was a fairly quiet Tuesday as far as Hollywood was concerned and it was particularly quiet along the street James Ashton chose to follow. This street contained two bars, one was a modern, expensive club, frequented by stars and Hollywood's B-list, the other was a rundown dive with overflowing trash and a broken jukebox.
James turned right, entering the home of the broken jukebox.
Not five minutes had passed before a second man walked down the street. This time it was a tall, stony faced individual who looked to be in his early thirties. His cold features were unmistakably handsome and his dark suit grazed his form perfectly, yet he was oblivious to the admiring eyes of the men and women pooled outside the club.
Instead, with his brow furrowed, he strode towards the dive bar and ducked through the low doorway. Upon entering the place he found that it was near empty, save a pair of men surrounding the battered pool table and a quiet young man seated at the bar. Something compelled him away from his usual perch at the back of the room and he found himself seated at the bar, not two seats over from the stranger.
He recieved his usual whiskey from the bartender and a moment or two passed in utter silence, the two men sipping their drinks as strangers, before he broke it. "Mr Ashton, if I am not mistaken?" He rarely was, and this time was no exception. The young man glanced at him, startled and appeared lost for words. "I know some of the individuals working on your film. I thought you might find your way here." "Here?" The young man found his voice. "This desolate excuse of a bar, I mean." The older man waved his drink towards the cracked wallpaper. "I like to come here when I need to think, and from what I hear, you have been doing a lot of thinking." James flushed and glared down into his glass, swirling the whiskey absentmindedly. He didn't much appreciate this stranger commenting on his choices. "You write well Mr Ashton. Believe me, I don't give praise lightly." James let out a snort of breath that drew a frown from the older man and he found his anger threatening to surface. "If my writing was so good then why on Earth do they need to scrap it all? There's barely anything of mine left in this damn thing." "When you have something you are passionate about, Mr Ashton, sometimes it's worth taking risks for. If I were you I would reconsider these proceedings with great care." The older man appraised him over his glass before draining it and standing, pulling his briefcase to his side and adjusting his lapel. "Stand by your work, James." With that he turned and strode from the room. James turned back to the bar, puzzled. Who had this man been, to critique his work and advise him without even giving his name? As he left the bar, Thomas shook his head. Some people just refused to appreciate talent when they had it.

A cry of pain rang out across the grounds of the manor, cutting across the otherwise empty halls, sharp and sudden but not for the first time that afternoon. Drawing closer to the source of the cry would've revealed new sounds, had there been any other beings in the vast property to do so. The quiet rhythmic noise of classical music flowed from the dining hall along with a woman's voice. "Whoops, sorry Bertie!" Maxwell caught her eye as she winked conspiratorially to him over his brother's shoulder. His brother in turn was too busy hopping backwards on one foot to take any notice. "How can you ever hope to charm your way back into court if you can not even address me correctly? Now straighten your back and take this seriously." He leaned back into his chair, chuckling to himself as he watched his brother's scowl deepen as his toes were once more trampled. He idly fingered the place setting in front of him, pushing the fish knife out of place and back again as the smile that had settled on his lips since they had successfully retrieved their contender from the airport faltered a little. He was excited to see her, that was a given, but that was also the problem. He watched as she span across the floor in time with the music. She lacked the grace and elegance of most Cordonian noblewomen but he had found his eyes been draw to her more frequently than they had been to any before. He had easily rushed to the airport, driven by the overwhelming need to see her again, to have her by his side again, but now that she had returned he knew what must follow. She was the Prince's. For the sake of House Beaumont, she was the Prince's. But how he wished she wasn't.
