Can "En effet" and "En fait" be used interchangeably depending on context? For example, if a friend says he will vote for Macron because the alternative is a fascist pig, can I say "oui, en effet" but also "en fait..."? In this case, do both these expressions mean "indeed" or something like this? Or am I completely wrong? Can't really differentiate between them. Also, can both be used as "actually" sometimes?

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN EN EFFET / EN FAIT“En effet” is much closer to “indeed” and is used as a confirmation to something. It’s quite an empathetic response to give, to show that you agree, that you understand. “I’d rather vote for Macron than a fascist pig” > “Oui, en effet !” (Yeah, that’s for sure!/ You’re totally right!) “I can’t vote for le Pen. I’m Jewish, I can’t vote for Holocaust deniers.” > “En effet…” (Yeah, I understand… ) “En fait” means actually, in a way that will add something to the conversation. It’s a logical and informative response to give, as it’s used to either add an information, agree/disagree with an opinion and reinforcing it with concrete facts. “I don’t know who I’ll vote for. I don’t believe that le Pen is that terrible” > “En fait, si. Elle est xénophobe et négationniste, et je vais te le prouver avec des exemples concrets”. (Actually, she is. She’s xenophobe and a Holocaust denier, and I’ll prove that to you with concrete examples).Both can mean actually, especially in written French as, all in all, they both confirm and sometimes validate your interlocutor’s speech. “En effet” is a very common link word we use to organize the thoughts as we write, like consequently, furthermore, etc. We use it to add an information, period. So that’s probably why it’s confusing for you. You probably learned it as a basic written link word. But you have to differentiate written and oral French, which sometimes differ and this is a great example of that. In French speech, the difference is quite clear as one is more empathetic and the other more practical. “En fait” is also more common in French speech than written French. I’d personally wouldn’t use it as a link word while writing because it would feel quite weak, not very pretty. I’d just stick “En effet” for that. Hope it helps!
