I lift, I bind, I breathe—each movement a testament to the devotion that turns a dancer into an artist, and art into life.
This transition has been two years in the making - with a broken toe and healing journey thrown in just to make the challenge even more challenging. I'm not a natural backbender and I've had to overcome a lot of doubt, frustration, and fear along the way. I happen to accidentally catch this first experience flip over a few weeks ago when videoing to understand why I couldn't hop over. (ps after my initial shock there was a dance party followed by a few more hop overs to convince me it wasn't a freak accident) I've seen a few articles floating around the Internet lately about what is and isn't yoga. About how the asana practice is moving in the direction of gymnastics and contortion. The word yoga translates to "focus." Most yogis I hear refer to the word as "union." But you can't unify something until you pay attention to it. So it is through a practice of focus and refining the art of being present and paying attention that separation dissolves and opens the door to harmony. It is only when you arrive in this moment that you can choose love now. I love to watch the Olympics, especially gymnastics. I love to go to circ du soleil shows. I love going to the symphony and the ballet. I love watching my own daughter give all her energy to playing on the playground or doing her homework. I have a strong appreciation and admiration for people that are dedicated and focused. They did not just simply wake up one day with the ability to execute their craft with grace and ease ... it is the combination of their affinity for their craft and a hell of a lot of focus, passion, and hard work. Sometimes I get on my mat and work hard at being still, slowing down, and making space. Sometimes I get in my mat and use my practice of focus to challenge by body to find different aspects of flexibility, strength, and balance. And so will you. #doyourownyoga #endlesspractice ❤️🙏🏼 #beinfinite #alexismartinyoga
