💔 - A memory that leaves them feeling lonely

When she breathes, Moira must be aware of both the speed and volume at which she does so. 

In the last two weeks alone she has become well acquainted with the dreary back corner of the classroom- she is there almost daily, each time for something different. Too loud, too quiet, talking back, acting up, falling asleep. She is not so stupid or so young that she can’t tell when the teacher is lying, but what can she do? The woman hardly knows her name, just points at Moira and says ‘you’ with the kind of vitriol that a six-year-old should not be familiar with (but is). The other children snap to attention, staring at her, wide-eyed, some smiling, some laughing, because apparently, it’s amusing to watch the freak be called out again. When it happens, she’s like the class pet, holding their attention just long enough to entertain. The rest of the time they avoid her like the plague, as if she would poison them with her presence alone– on a rare occasion, one dares to approach her and ask what happened? What’s wrong with you? Are you sick? Moira never knows what to say, so she doesn’t say anything. That probably scares them even more.

Today, she breathes too loud. No– she doesn’t, she tells herself. Her teacher turns around and catches her eyes. That is as good an excuse as any. It ignites a fire in the woman, makes her face contort in anger and her eyes nearly pop right out of her head; horrifying to the point that Moira wonders if this is what the Devil looks like. Today, she snatches Moira by the collar and throws her into the corner, takes the chair away and tells her to sit on the floor and ask God to forgive her for her insubordination. May God have mercy on you, because I will not.

Our Father in Heaven, hallowed be thy name. God, please forgive me for my insubordination.

She prays silently, for fear of what may happen if she doesn’t.

Lord, please let me be what I need to be. Please help me learn, please offer me the guidance I need to be better than I am. Please fix me, or show me how to fix myself, please God, please.

As always, there is silence. As always, a hollowness in her chest and a knot in her stomach. She keeps praying, though, because her thoughts are all that keep her sane- maybe God just can’t hear me. Maybe he doesn’t want to hear me. Moira stares at the white walls, memorizing each flaw, making friends with the chips in the paint. 

How miserable that they are her only company.

The soldier receives a message from Sombra on his comm. this April 1st. Nothing out of the ordinary, it's entirely similar to the usual caches of info she sends him occasionally concerning their shared interests. Except today One (1) of those links leads not to info, but to a video showcasing the eternal classic: Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". Thank Reinhardt for showing her this one.

well, moira always figured that when it came to human trials, it only made sense to run tests on herself before anyone else- besides she’s not stupid, she knows ovw is not about to let her do genetic alterations on just anyone. but it was the only way to see proper results. there’s only so much you can do with blood and tissue samples.

it was during testing on de/regenerative cells that caused the trauma to her right arm. the results were almost instantaneous- her cells degenerated faster than her body was able to process. instead of harnessing an ability that would allow her body to heal faster, her body started withering away. it fuckin hurt :’)

anyway, she managed to get the degeneration under control but was unable to reverse it. since then, she has experienced a myriad of painful side effects. her state of being is very, very similar to that of reaper’s- however she’s had years to discover the nuances of it and find ways to let it benefit her. the life steal and fade are both abilities brought on by her degeneration. life steal has become a necessity. if left too long without it, she basically starts to die. her cellular structure would continue to fall apart until her body could no longer function. the fade ability, on the other hand, utilizes the degeneration- it doesn’t hurt, necessarily, but it isn’t pleasant and she only does it when necessary, as it also sharply speeds up the degeneration of her cells each time she does it.

also, her life steal aids her lil healy machine but that’s headcanon for another time, this is already really long LOL

so her arm is permanently scarred from that, having been the main injection site. however the trauma can be also be seen in her back, and can further appear on other parts of her body depending on how bad a state she’s in. the worse the degeneration, the more decrepit she appears
