Progress Blog 10 : Reflection

Throughout the course of this semester, this class has allowed me to maintain a better grasp on interconnected literacy between different cultures. It has taught me that literacy has a much bigger role in everyday life than I ever would have guessed, and it has given me insight into what a fandom can do for spreading literacy and how the individuals of a fandom can adapt their own sense of literacy practices in the way they interact with one another on the site. The forum of comments on each fandom’s accounts are my favorite area of research. The way the fans interact with each other and the artwork they create represents literacy events and contributes to the growth of the fandom as a whole. I really liked studying the way in which the fans encouraged each other to excel in the fandom, especially when they post a fan work and others show them appreciation for it. I like that the class has given me a bigger interest for discourse communities and how small or large groups of individuals can come together to create literacy.

5.2: Final Video

I just finished recording and editing my final video for my project. It is about six minutes long, so it means the requirements to take place of the ten to fifteen page paper. I just had to do 30 seconds per-page. I feel pretty confident that I answered all things I am suppose to answer for this project. I might have been able to put more effort and work into it, but I also feel like I did well. Like maybe I should have put for editing efforts into it to make it better. I am really hoping that I get a good grade on this project for multiple reasons. Aside from wanting to get a good grade in this class, I also want to show that I have put effort into this project and learning. All I have left to do is save the video file and upload it to YouTube and the MyLeo portal.

5.1: Final Project Proposal

Okay so hear me out, I want to do a video. Yes, yes. I did a video for my first writing assignment for this class, but look... I have a great idea! So the first video I used it as a season opener. I think it is only right if I have a season closer as well. The season opens with new bonds and relationships opening, therefore, it must close with a relationship being successful, just like ti does in the Bachelor in Paradise show. I think it would be cool if Karen gets proposed to by the guy. I think he could say something like this “Karen, I have been able to see you learn and grow this semester in your English 1302 class. I’d really like the chance to interview you over your final research project. Will you allow me to do that?” I don’t really want him to ask her to marry him, because I think it is a little weird, so instead he ask for permission to interview her over the final project. I have to wait for approval from my teacher to actually do this. Hopefully she says yes and tells me how long the video has to be.

4.2: Data Collection

I have concluded with the interview process. Again, some where in person and some were over the phone. Now that I have it all, I think the next step is to put it all together and compare. For the fourth writing assignment in this class I only need to focus on a couple of my interviews. The way I plan on choosing is based on the notes/answers I took from them. I want the ones that are detailed that way my writing assignment can be detailed as well. This is prepare me to think about my final writing assignment for this class. I also plan to look at articles and find key details used from viewers around the world. The reason I want to do this is because it allows me to look at what other people say and think; people who I do not have contact with and no previous knowledge about. It gives me a better view of literacy throughout the nation, rather than just the area I have direct access to, which is people in Texas.

4.1: Interviews

I have decided to start my interviews this week. This allows me to have a week to do them, and then have a week to write my three page paper of my findings and how exactly I did the research. I have decided on a specific order to interview people because I think it will allow me to have an open mind throughout the interview process. The way I plan on doing it this week is a person a day, this means I will talk to one person each day, Monday through Friday. It allows me to interview, then take some time to process and analyze the data I have collected. The one think I am hope for is this: I really hope all the the people I am interviewing come in with an open mind and no not feel pressured to answer all the questions I have. I think if they feel pressured then the answers will come out short and untruthful. I want this research to be as accurate as possible.

3.2: Research Ideas

So I finally made my questions to ask the people I will be interviewing for my english project. I have 14 questions total and I organized them in a way that allows the interview to flow. I was sure to ask for their permission to do something, such as showing them the video, before actually doing so. The video is only 6 minutes long so I think it fits in perfectly. I started the questions by asking some basic questions about themselves, such as their name and age. It gets a little deeper with a question about their childhood and how they grew up. I think this is important because it gets them to think a little deeper into the past. This helps with them answering how they learned to read and write. The I go into asking them about Bachelor in Paradise just to get them thinking. I ask about what specifically happens in the clip. I end the interview with getting the participant to connect the show and literacy by understanding how where we grow up and who we grow up around can influence our literacy.

3.1: Research Proposal

I submitted my 3 page essay over my research proposal. As you know by now, I want to do Bachelor in Paradise, I really don’t know how this is going to be approved. I obviously hope it does, I see a lot of potential in this fandom. There are articles that relate to specific events that happen throughout the show. I actually already have specific event clip from the show that I want to show. The clip I have decided on is the one with Blake and Kristina from the most recent season. Now I need to create questions that I will ask the five people i have chosen to interview. I have an idea of the type of questions I want to ask, but I don’t really know what specifically I am looking for at the moment. Of course it has to relate to literacy so I want it to connect to their own and the people in the show who are involved. I want to make them question why their literacy is different and how might this happen. So the next thing I have to do is create my questions and then move to interviewing.

2.2: Why Bachelor in Paradise

No one responded to my discussion post, which I am kind of sad about, but it is okay. I wrote about wanting to do my project about Bachelor in Paradise. I explained that it was a little funny, but it would be a great one to do. I think it has a lot of potential with this topic at hand. There are so many different people who not only watch the show, but who participate in the show. The literacy that is used comes from all over the country which contributes to this research. I think there is a lot to look at with this fandom. The fans are so deep into it the show that they talk about it so much and make the news. The ext assignment is to write a research proposal for this.
