A really quick look at a old English anvil I have. 1853 Willam Foster anvil will lost horn. I've seen quite a few old English anvils missing horn. These anvil were wrought iron & were forged in pieces. They would forge weld on the feet, heel & horn. Also a steel plate was welded on for the face. Sometimes if the welds had a flaw, it may break free when being struck,especially in a cold barn. The later forged anvils like hay budden , peter Wright & Trenton .
