High school writers in grades 10-12 from Mississippi or nearby Alabama may enter 1-3 poems, a story, or an essay on the theme: “Overcoming the Silence: To speak out when ‘It warrants no stir’” based on Eudora Welty’s story “The Demonstrators.”

There is no contest fee, and the winners will read at the Eudora Welty Writers Symposium, October 20-22, at Mississippi University for Women.

Ephemera Prize

Did I mention that we received 40 submissions for the Ephemera Prize? Not bad for our first year! The judges are reviewing them now, and I hope to have names of the winners in time to invite them to the Symposium and print their names in our program.

Mississippi High School Students, if you didn't get your submission in on time this year, we hope to do it again next year with a new theme. And if you're a graduating senior, you should check out our Neill James Scholarships

Ephemera Prize Submissions

All week long, I've been anticipating the onslaught of what we hope will be an avalanche of great high school writing. Since it's our first year doing the Ephemera Prize, it's hard to know what the response will be. But tonight we've started to get our first submissions. The deadline is tomorrow (Sept. 15, 2014), so we expect many more in the next 24 hours or so. If you're a Mississippi high school student in grades 10-12, I hope you've already begun your submission (or written something already that would work well with our theme, "'Homesick for Somewhere': Displacement, Loss, and Longing in the South." Ephemera Prize Tips

Have you ever felt homesick, even when you were at home? Have you longed for another time or place? Have you moved from one home to another? Or have you lost someone or something close to you? Do you know someone who has experienced these situations?

Write about these experiences in a poem, essay, or story, and submit it to the Ephemera Prize (if you're a 10-12 grader living in Mississippi).
