i NEED to know if you have any insight on this or if you’re asking the same question as me
cause she looks human, right? and that’s the thing you first process upon first reading it. but also, she speaks as if she’s part of the monster race??
“for OUR own benefit” implies that she’s a monster as well, and it’s really my biggest piece of evidence, but it could be a typo unfortunately
“i find the human race poisonous and fiendish… and should be wiped off the world.” going in with the assumption that she’s human, this sentence is VERY confusing, because well, isn’t SHE part of the human race?? i know people who would say they’ve lost faith in humanity, but i can’t think of anyone but edgy teens/young adults in their joker arc that would call the entire human race “poisonous and fiendish”. it feels, very strange from a story standpoint though
“from your side” could somewhat imply that moopey is a human?? i don’t think so though, i have a feeling there’s just information missing here
another thing moopey being human wouldn’t explain is how she disappeared from the main story. it’s fair to assume she died of unknown causes, and if she DID die, then wouldn’t her soul still BE somewhere, considering humans can persist after death? if gester truly hated the human race, why wouldn’t he take moopey’s soul instead of frisks?? unless she’s a monster, and her soul wouldn’t have persisted after death, gester would have had ever reason to not just, take her soul. i get that he loves her but at the same time moopey would willingly give up her soul if she ever died from the looks of it
so what IS she?? a vampire? a shapeshifter?? a really convincing alien assimilating to society??? a ghost possessing a human looking body???? a really pretty zombie????? i need to know
if you have answers or even just are asking the same question as me, that would be swell
anyways apologies for the ramble i really like moopey as an idea but also she’s just Such an Enigma that it’s been bugging me for months lmao
Ah okay Moopey yeah! I gotcha!
When I reread Epictale a few months ago, I also wondered the same things about her, so I searched all of Yugo’s blog for anything with Moopey, and what I got was this:
Moopey is/was a human, full-stop. Her name is definitely odd, and like many things about her, we don’t know if that was her real name or if that’s her new name as part of monster society lovingly gifted to her by a very young, at the time princess Toriel.
The reason why Moopey speaks so disconnectedly from humanity is because she no longer considers herself as part of humanity’s side. She’s like Undertale Chara when they fell Underground. She hates humanity and thinks they’re the worst of the worst, a poison upon the world. Unlike monsters, who are so good because their Souls are literally made of love, compassion, and kindness.
We don’t know why Moopey hates humanity, but it’s confirmed with her presence as Gaster’s assistant that she has fully allied herself with Monsterkind and actively works to aid monsters in the pre-War conflict.
So she IS 100% human, species-wise. Her extreme misanthropy has this disconnect, where she knows biologically she is human but actively tries to distance herself from humanity in both her actions and her words.
As for what happened to Moopey and how it plays into Epictale, we just don’t know. It hasn’t been written or shown yet.
There’s no answered ask about it yet in Yugo’s asks: what happened to her Soul after she died? How did she die? What impact did this have on the story? — because it would’ve been spoilers.
As for the Epictale comic, it takes place years later — given that Toriel is canonically in her seventies by then and Moopey was alive in the prequel comic when Toriel was a preteen, that’s about 50 years or so my guess. Moopey would be long gone by then, and then, and we don’t know how or what Gaster or those who knew her did in their grief or in honor of her memory.
I think we’re supposed to learn about all that in the Epictale prequel comic Love? But because it’s currently on hiatus/a work in progress, that leaves Moopey’s past and present/future ambiguous. This all takes place before the war between monsters and humans but tensions are still high that everyone is preparing for war, shown by Gaster and Moopey discussing Gaster’s idyllic plans to take out human ambassadors before the conflict could escalate. Did she give up her Soul? If she did, what happened after? Did she die during the War? Did she die after the monsters were sealed? We don’t know.
And we won’t know until the Love? comic continues or Yugo spoils it in an ask. Moopey will remain an enigma for the foreseeable future.
What we do know for certain though is:
2. She’s fully allied with and loves monsters
*She works with and for Gaster, but is extremely clever and observant enough that Gaster views her as an equal and partner in intellect
3. She and Gaster mutually love one another
*Yugo stated that in an alternate universe where Moopey didn’t die and things were better, she and Gaster would have gotten married and cared for Toriel as their daughter figure
*In noncanon art to the story (if Moopey was alive during Epictale’s comic events), Moopey asks Gaster why he chooses her if he has this whole cast of remarkable women to choose from. Gaster declares her his one and only — they could never compare to her; emphasizing that Moopey is the one true love of Gaster’s life
4. She’s unaware of Creators or that they are the cast in the story of Epictale
*This is the case of the current pages in the Love? Comic, where she remarks how fantastical it would be for alternate timelines and controlling them to exist. Gaster however already knows about it (to what extent in that time, unknown) and responds with a knowing comment.
5. Her misanthropy and views are echoed by Gaster
*When he tries to play the role of the ultimate human hater as his modus operandi for engaging in the genocide of Epictale to break the barrier, Gaster echoes Moopey’s words that humanity was a “poison and plague that must be destroyed to save the world”. Yugo has stated that is not actually how Gaster feels, but the role he plays to be The Big Bad of Epictale
I’m sorry I can’t provide any further information given Moopey’s ambiguous role, but I hope this helps.
