Charles Auguste Émile Durand, known as Carolus-Duran, focused his attention after the Franco-Prussian War on portraits of members of French high society, such as this large canvas that depicts his sister-in-law Sophie Croizette. A successful painting instructor, Durand became director of the French Academy in Rome in 1904 and held that position until 1913.
