I found this bulletin board in Jefferson Hall on East Green. It has visuals to describe the difference between equity and equality. It is on the second floor in the hallway for residents to see. It is colorful and attracted my eye as I walked down the hallway. Equity allows everyone to have the chance to be successful, but equality gives the same amount of help to everyone regardless of their individual needs. This immediately reminded me of the article we read during week one. In “Education Reform and the Failure to Fix Inequality in America,” Julie Mujic describes the need for equal access to a quality education. She claims in order to equalize access to education “schools need new and innovative approaches to turn resources into student results” (Mujic 2). On the board, the people have boxes which could represent resources in this case. In order to be equitable, students will need different amounts of help or resources to be successful. Education access in the “U.S. has improved for demographic groups across four important categories: race, class, ethnicity, and gender. But progress on these fronts have been slow” (Mujic 2). There is still a long way to go to make access to education equitable.
