Ashen wings patterned with the images of human skulls have replaced leaves in the forests on the island of Superbia, a Swarm this large could only warn of a great disaster to come. For the Lord did not use the Swarm to warn of his plagues to come, it was the Swarm that sucked the land dry, that struck fear in the eyes of those whose sights were only set upon themselves. Attracted to the island of the Prideful by the disasters they were likely to create themselves, or perhaps drawn in by bright lights reflected by the island’s crystalline flora, it would soon be more than their wings that would block out the reflections of the prideful. The blood spilled in disasters forewarned would stain the crystals red.

This week's featured monster is a Mothman.

A large swarm of Mothmen has gathered on the island of Superbia, forewarning a great disaster. They made no attempt to hide themselves, resting on the branches of the island’s trees and sleeping with wings shading the mirror crystals. Eyes drawn to one’s own reflection may instead catch sight of a Mothman’s eye spots.

The assistance of Demons can be used in felling this week’s monster, however the best tactic to kill a Mothman is catching them while they are distracted. Avoid direct eye contact, and draw their attention with bright lights, spilled blood, or honey.

MOTHMAN

NAME Mothman OTHER NAMES Owlman, Black Bird of Chernobyl, Freiburg Shrieker ORIGIN North America (Virginia, most notably), Japan, Germany, Russia, South America, England BIOLOGICAL SEX Unknown ETYMOLOGY It’s a fairly recently reported cryptid, so its name is pretty self explanatory, derived from the English words ‘moth’ and ‘man,’ signifying a most basic description of its appearance, a humanoid moth.

Mothmen are omens, large, furry beings said to appear in the moments before a disaster, in the exact place it will happen. They are characterized by their humanoid size, large wings, and glowing red eyes. Though they are harbingers for negative events, they are known to strike irrational, paralyzing fear into the hearts of all who behold them.

ABILITIES

- High speed flight. - Creation of an irrational fear response. - Future sight, namely the ability to sense impending disasters. - Paralysis, for any who look into their eyes or the eye spots on their wings. - Hypnosis, for any who look into the eye spots on their wings. - Ability to implant visions of disaster. - Attacks with claws and teeth. - Keen sense for blood and the ability to find its source.

Demons, Cryptids, or Extraterrestrials, their origin in the worlds of the living was largely unknown, like their intent, the nature of their existence was shrouded in nothing more than mystery. They are eerie beings that scarcely return to the surface from the skies of ALLEGRIA, only folding their wings to roost in the places their visions mark as places where disaster will occur. It is their method of predation. Though they are known omens for impending danger, though their presence strikes nothing more than fear into the heart of man, one look into their piercing red eyes leaves one paralyzed, locked into the gruesome fate that surely awaits them in their future.

When nature has taken its course, they feed, swarming like flies, the air full of the sound of their wingbeats fluttering in time, a near deafening buzz. With the expansion of their pharynx, the Mothman sucks the life from victims of the tragedies they warn of, feeding on the innards of casualties of strife. The process of feeding creates an uncharacteristic squeaking noise, a method of evolution also used to fend off predators.

Mothmen are known for their striking red eyes and large eye spots. When captivating prey, they unfurl their wings fully, meaning to do nothing more than hypnotize and terrorize. Their large wings allow them to fly at near supersonic speeds, and their teeth and talons are sharp as any of ALLEGRIA’S beasts.

Known effective items against a Mothman are nothing more than diversions. Mothmen are drawn to bright light. They can be paralyzed by the sight of their own eyes reflected back at them. Mothmen are easily distracted by nectar or honey. They are rendered entirely immobile if their wings are removed. And, as always, as a last resort, spilled blood serves to send them into a singleminded state, and when distracted by thoughts of feeding, they can be felled.

The gluttons of Gula had their fill of the Chorus’ song till they could hear no more, till the last of their blood drained from their ears, still, nothing could satisfy the Sisters’ thirst for death.Not even the parched lands of Luxuria could truly dry their throats for long, however. In dry air, with heaving lungs, the Chorus would continue to scream their last screams, songs of warning, a siren’s sound to lure those who lusted for death to their graves. Appearing in the guise of young maidens, crying tears of grief stained red with the blood of the other islands, they would take on a facade of easy prey for those ruled by the demons of Lust, though, the only bed they will lie in is the death bed of their prey.

Grieving young maidens seem easy prey for the lustful, guised in black lace veils and crying tears, singing mournful songs for those brought to an early grave, but they lust for nothing but death. Beware their ploys!

Some of the singing death remains trapped in Acedia's hell, but those that prevailed have come out far too strong. Their voices attained a melody befitting the audience of Gods, but there are no glorious beings to be found on the islands of sin. Gula, however, is different. Here, their songs hold no meaning. A man who eats himself to death is no more worthy than an ant trapped beneath the weight of a stone heavier than their strength allows them to carry. Though, on the island of Gluttony, their song melted into the tantalizing air of scents and molded them into something new. Nothing better, but something far more welcoming to the residents of this buffet. The music can be heard in a soft hum when the right ear catches it, but it's the smell that'll draw them in. What scent would monsters that sing of great death be perceived as? The answer is quite simple: ambrosia, the food of Gods. A trap befitting such wicked beings, but those that get too close to try and taste the Chorus' flesh will be greeted with a most wretched hello.

Don't get too greedy! The closer you are to a banshee, the more likely it is that you'll lose your hearing from their screams before the sound pierces your organs hard enough to make them burst. It's not the prettiest death, but it'd look the tastiest!

Gold cursed the strength of the Chorus, but one must not forget where the soul of a Banshee's voice roots from. Avaritia succeeded in lowering the morbid songstresses' numbers, but only gave better purpose for their existence on the islands of sin. Upon arriving to Acedia, the screams have dulled to mere lullabies. The softness is an attempt to better mold into the depressingly unlively place, but do not believe the songs. The closer one gets to a blissful and peaceful sleep, the closer they are to greeting Death in all its forms. The calm is deliberately deceiving, but what does laziness know of a lie? How can one careless enough to allow sleep grace them in the open know of what awaits them? So sleep. Someone may yell to not step into the light, but there is no light at the end of this tunnel. Fall hard enough and the Chorus' screams will pierce ears hard enough to make the body bleed before the soul's final moments.

Because of Acedia's layout, some of the Chorus is scattered through its troubling terrain. Their song is weakened, but because of how slow things go along in Acedia - they've found better music in following the sounds the island seems to produce on its own... almost as if they're trying to make a mixtape of soft death together, if you will.

The violent cries from the mess that's left of Ira have died down, allowing a momentary peace to paint the island of Wrath as the Chorus carries on its show. But on the island of Greed, there is plenty more to mourn. Death screams louder than their voices do here, but do not be fooled by the silence. Golden paths have been ruined with blotches of silver among them: beautiful combs, inviting to those that know of the suffering the lustrous yellow brings to those that do so much as touch it. The pitch of the screams lowered with their arrival, but their wits are still about them. There is plenty of music to be made and found in someone willing to pick up what may lead them to their final moments... This is, after all, what they exist for. Unfortunate predictaments, and what better way to test the naivety of Avaritia's inhabitants than through their own sin? A befitting test for a soon-to-be befitting song.

The Chorus has grown quieter, but don't be fooled by it! The closer someone gets to a comb, whether knowingly or unknowingly, the louder the screams get. Be careful not to step on one or else the thin, wretched hand of one of the songstresses' will be gripped around your throat for ruining her treasure.

The terrain of the island isn't effected by the Chorus' appearance, but the voices will echo due to some of the structures on it.

Ruination is all that is left in the wake of envious screams, the sounds of the Chorus now gone from the winds of Invidia. Drawn away by the coy baiting of their jealousy, only shadows and corpses remain on the island of the envious, a place wanting again for the lives of its inhabitants. Those used to sonic booms created when volcanoes erupt may be none the wiser to the screams echoing through Ira's tectonic canyons and sulfur tunnels. Channels of lava, stirred by the sound of Choral screams, bubbles like the rage in their blood. The wrath of man has brought far too many to a premature death, a death not even a Banshee could sing for. Do not trust in your anger, fear for a scream that burns red, lest you be blown away from their rage and buried in ash.

The Chorus has traveled on the wind and waves to the island of Ira, gathering like vultures to scream at the corpses left behind by the ministrations of the wrathful. Their anger is only greater provoked by further thoughts of death, of deaths they could not see, in memoriam of fallen Sisters. Those wishing to avenge the death in Ira's sister islands only wish to add to the count, may the wrathful be wary.

The Banshees' supersonic voices are stirring up the island's latent tectonic activity, beware of frequent earthquakes and eruptions!

Nick was regretting his return to Invidia. He’d heard the screams coming from some other island the day before, but now they were here, so close that his ears were ringing. He ran from them, searching for a means of escaping the awful cries, and nearly tripped on a strange pink tree root in the process. He didn’t want to get involved with whatever was going on—how could he? He didn’t have...no.

The sinking feeling in his stomach hit him like a ton of bricks. How had he not realized it sooner? He didn’t have his gun, nor his scissors! Shit! If those screams meant trouble, he was as good as dead. The wailing sounds drew nearer, and to his horror, he recognized a voice among them. That was Charlie’s voice! That was his boss’s voice; it had to be! His gut reminded him of his boss’ death, but then again, he was dead too. He owed that man his life, and it sickened him that Charlie could be in danger, or maybe in pain—worse yet, both—and he didn’t have a means to help. He had to do something. He couldn’t keep running away; not now. “Lucifer! Help me out! Tell me what’s going on!”

He yelled for his demon over the nearby cries, and his personal representation of Pride materialized beside him, placing hands over his ears and speaking into his thoughts. “They are banshees, Master. Your boss is not among them. That is a trick to lure you to them, and they will kill you if they find you.”

“But...Charlie...” His voice cracked, and he would have shaken his head if not for the hands on either side of it. He wanted to believe what Lucifer was saying and ignore the screams, but he just couldn’t. The cries sounded too real; hit too close to home. Tearing away from Lucifer, he blindly ran towards the screaming—and straight into someone else. The impact caused him to stumble and reel back, and he put a hand to his shoulder, rubbing a sore spot. “Oof! Ouch...dammit.”

Wait—a person? “Boss...?” He blinked, taking a step back to look at the man he’d run into. His shoulders drooped, and the disappointment showed clear on his face. “Sorry—never mind. I’m looking for someone.”
