Building a BAD Relationship
WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A WRITER’S REFERENCE BUT THIS POST MAY BE TRIGGERING SO BE CAREFUL, M’KAY?
This is going to be one of the hardest posts I will ever make:
I’m trying to write a couple that has an UNHEALTHY relationship, but not abusive. Basically, they think they love each other, but...they don’t. They really don’t. So a lot of my brain power has been thinking about how to make an unhealthy relationship in which BOTH parties are instigators to the unhealthiness of it which has been... interesting (my stomach feels sick, guys).
So! Here’s what I’ve come up with:
Going Ghost (Kinda)
So my childhood did not consist of Nickelodeon, Disney Channel/XD, or Cartoon Network.
This is important to know because this year, my Halloween celebration has been me bingeing Danny Phantom, a show I have never seen before. I’ve heard good things about it and it looked cool, so I’ve been watching it. I am on the last season and I have some thoughts that I thought I’d just put out there.
It’s a good show. Really, it is. I’ve enjoyed the characters, the villain's are fun (Plasmius is one of the most interesting characters in the show and I absolutely hate and love him), the world building is fantastic and the show has a lot of untapped potential.
HOWEVER--
Everyone who wants a reboot to this thing, I don’t think it would go well. And I know, reboots are known for being bad for the most part but I REALLY don’t think it would go well-- unless you changed up A LOT of stuff.
First off: do you all realize how many jokes they were able to shove into this show that I would not consider “age appropriate”. Like HOLY KRIFF, I can’t tell you how many times I wanted to smack Danny and Tucker because I don’t care if you’re a fourteen year old boy. A girl would smack you for saying something like that.
Sam by far is the most interesting and well rounded character. I liked how they made her a goth but it never felt forced. It was just part of her character. I also appreciated how she was a vegetarian and fought for her ideals, but she never really pushed Danny and Tucker to also become vegetarian (except for that first episode). I felt like she was well-rounded and a good female character over-all.
Which is why I know for a fact that any reboot would most likely ruin her. Because every reboot looks at the girls of the old show and goes, “Mmmh, how do we make this character stronger?” Answer: you don’t. Don’t touch Sam in any way, shape, or form. She’s perfect and you don’t need her to become the brains, muscle, and heart of the operation, leaving Danny and Tucker as idiots who cannot succeed without her.
I jumped into the realm of Danny Phantom fanfiction for a quick look around. One word: YIKES. Do y’all know how dark some of those things are? Like, HOLY KRIFF, I found multiple stories of Danny’s parents trying to kill him KNOWING IT WAS THEIR SON. Also the shipping community has some very... interesting ideas. Many of them illegal. That’s all I am going to say on that. Please don’t do them.
Danny and Tucker, please grow up. It’s fine to have crushes on girls and make heart eyes at them. I’m okay with Danny’s weird crush on Paulina and his semi-better one on Valerie. What I’m not okay with was the MULTIPLE jokes involving the girl’s locker room. Need I remind you: THIS WAS A KIDS SHOW. (Also, mini-skirt Fridays? I would punch any boy that suggested this in my high school so why Sam never spoke up about this, I don’t know)
Danny was also an excellent character (minus the point above). He was never perfect and made a lot of mistakes. I did not feel like there was ever a duplicate “lesson” that he had to learn repeatedly, minus his several check-ins on not getting carried away with his powers. I actually really liked this because it was never the “exact same” lesson in the same circumstances. (Also, this is a personal preference, but I like the idea of just keeping him a guy. Shows are starting to lack in the good, male, character category in favor of tearing them down so the female can save the day and I’m just annoyed because CAN’T WE HAVE BOTH?)
Tucker needs a revamp. His two main traits were: he’s smart and he is very much into girls. Please tone back on the last one and do more with his smart side. I want to see this kid at an intelligence level of Pidge from Voltron. I want to see Tucker ghost-hunting inventions. I want to see this boy do something other then gaga over girls and cry when his PDA breaks (or smartphone at this point in age).
I have more but I think ten points is good for now. I’m not really looking for a reboot of this show, but I do not think I’d be completely against it. Just putting out some thoughts because why not?
So here’s my Halloween post/thoughts and me wishing y’all a Happy Halloween!
