How to counter the racism of ‘Othello’? Empower the actor, says Aldo Billingslea

Cal Shakes' 2016 production asked audiences to not shrug off tension but steep themselves in it.

Throughout his career playing Othello, Billingslea has stood up to directors who wanted to stage the “fit,” as Iago describes it. In California Shakespeare Theater’s 2016 production of the play, directed by Eric Ting, when Billingslea explained his objection during rehearsal, Ting wanted to put the objection in the show. Billingslea was reluctant at first: “I didn’t want it to be about not trusting the language” of Shakespeare, he says, but Ting persisted.

“In keeping with the theme of not letting the audience get pulled into a feeling of being swept away by the story,” recalls cast member Liz Sklar, who played Desdemona, “in trying to keep them complicit in the action of the story in the here and now, it started to feel like the exact right moment to have Aldo be himself, and speak to us all about his history and connection to this character and the actors who have played Othello.”

The result was that during the performance, the action paused, and Billingslea stepped out of character to speak as himself, explaining his refusal to play the fit. (The show also featured other breaks of character and the fourth wall.)

Singer-songwriter-guitarist Toshi Reagon brings her genre-bending music and irresistible performance style to this new opera, written in collaboration with her mother Bernice Johnson Reagon. Parable of the Sower, adapted from Octavia Butler’s post-apocalyptic novel of the same name, follows a young woman fleeing the violence of a futuristic Los Angeles wracked by environmental catastrophe. The work blends science fiction with African American spiritualism and deep insights on gender, race, and the future of human civilization.

Toshi Reagon is a one-woman celebration of all that’s dynamic, progressive, and uplifting in American music. Her big-hearted, hold-nothing-back approach to rock, blues, R&B, country, folk, spirituals, and funk has captivated audiences around the world, and her restless creativity has led her to collaborations with performers as wide-ranging as experimental theatre pioneer Robert Wilson, poet Carl Hancock Rux, and the Urban Bush Women and LAVA dance troupes, and her godfather Pete Seeger.
