... comes this awesome family who is allowing a morbidly obese man to swim in their pool in exchange for cleaning it.
"Leslie Duff, 40, weighs about 400 pounds after years of battling with weight problems. Duff wanted to get in shape and preferred swimming because he has "60-year-old" knees. But he found it embarrassing to use public pools. Worrying about what onlookers thought or said kept him from focusing on the task at hand. On May 1 Duff posted an ad on the online classifieds site Kijiji, offering labour in return for private pool use, but received no responses. But when he was interviewed in mid-May on CBC Radio's Ottawa Morning about his ordeal, Duff received about 300 emails from Ottawa and all over the country."
There were plenty of needlessly cruel, thoughtless, and hurtful comments on the earlier CBC story, and I'm glad that some good and kind people stepped up to help. I love how the family pets keep Duff company and encourage him in his workouts. And the best part? "Duff uses the pool four times a week and has increased from 20 laps a session to 70, has lost 10 pounds, and his knees feel better after swims."
Imagine the great things that can happen when we let go of our fears (Trust a stranger in our home?!) and work together for the good of more than just ourselves. This is what God expects of us. This is what Jesus commands, what the prophets remind us of over and over.
So what is your swimming pool, that needs to be shared? Who needs the things you cling to so tightly? How will you demonstrate God's loving-kindness?
Amy Campbell, Eric Wynn, and children, Undercover Nun thanks God for you! Mr. Duff, I pray for your continuing success in your journey of weight loss and fitness.
