The Punctuation that scores English today evolved over time. Western languages grew quickly as the printing press began to impact learning, law, and media. So, Punctuation here refers to a class of marks that have become conventional signals within our culture.
Still, we have problems
You learn the system over time from your reading and observation as well as from those who instruct you. Because the system can change, certain habits fall in and out of practice. Even the introduction of word-processing offers changes to rules you may have learned in elementary school.
1. Commas in Compound Sentences
A Compound Sentence consists of two (or more) Independent Clauses linked by a Coordinating Conjunction. The Coordinating Conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet, and so (FANBOYS).
When these conjunctions link Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, or Adverbs, you do not use a comma.
CORRECT INCORRECT happy or sad happy, or sad marched and sang marched, and sang softly or loudly softly, or loudly Mary and Tyrone Mary, and Tyrone
However, when the Coordinating Conjunction links Independent Clauses, it must be preceded by a Comma. Without the Comma, you have a Fused Sentence. With a Comma only, you have a Comma Splice.
