@eternablade said: ‘ sorry for the impromptu appearance, bede! i really did think opal would have passed on the message that i’d be here. ‘ his smile was apologetic, if not a touch guilty for his surprise arrival. ‘ promise i’ll be in and out of your hair pretty quickly. i just need to see how you’ve been handling the league challenge as a gym leader. ‘
in addition to playing a role in galar’s gym challenge, ballonlea stadium also fulfilled an important secondary purpose —— namely housing and rehabilitating WILD POKEMON the town’s modestly sized center lacked the room to monitor. unfortunately, leon’s surprise visit just so happened to come in the midst of feeding time. the field was abuzz with the chattering of COUNTLESS rowdy fairy types. a newly hatched ponyta wobbled around on legs still a touch unsteady. a generous distance away, several hattrem nibbled on their food, shooting displeased looks at the crowd. a towering grimmsnarl, diagnosed with a bad cough, reluctantly cradled a bowl that smelled strongly of medicinal herbs.
bede, in spite of his carefully crafted IMAGE, looked uncharacteristically tired and disheveled. the culprit seemed to be an especially unruly impidimp, currently tucked under one arm. he flailed around stubbornly, struggling in vain to slip out of the boy’s grasp. after a moment, bede crouched down to release him. ( albeit not without a stern look —— a silent command to PLEASE BEHAVE. )
standing back up, he looked leon over cautiously. a touch of wariness filled violet hues —— discomfort the boy was too prideful to voice. something about standing before the CHAIRMAN ( even as a different soul filled the position ) for evaluation struck him with a poignant cocktail of deja vu and anxiety. a silly fear. an IRRATIONAL one. he knew logically he had nothing to worry about. quirks aside, ballonlea stadium ran smoother under his leadership than ever. ( yet that was precisely why it was irrational, was it not? )
a few seconds passed in uncomfortable silence. then, the gym leader sighed. ❝ ... i suppose it can’t be HELPED. ❞ bede schooled his features into a look of calm indifference. chin high, shoulders squared. ❝ well then. how are we meant to do this? are there questions i need to answer, or am i to give you a tour of the building...? whatever it is, i’m WILLING to cooperate. ❞ the sooner he got this over with, the better.
@eternablade
u make everything difficult smh
@eternablade said: ‘ hey, bede! i never got to congratulate you on that fantastic impromptu match, back at the champion’s cup—i never anticipated something like that, but it was stellar! ‘
❝ congratulate me — ? ❞
bede looked genuinely taken aback by the former champion’s praise. ( praise? he was praising him for that stunt, wasn’t he? ) even now, the gym leader still struggled to wrap his head around why his interruption had been so positively received, so absolutely adored. he had gained a legitimate fanbase for what bede personally regarded as a rather impulsive lapse in judgement. news reporters clamored to ask him when they could expect a repeat performance — on multiple occasions, in fact.
he really couldn’t make heads or tails of it. bede had acted every bit a reckless child — why was he being rewarded? ( to be honest, it was a bit embarrassing... )
❝ personally, stellar is not the word i would use to describe it. ❞ his words carried with them a slightly sarcastic edge — hinting subtly at the young gym leader’s true feelings. a revealing mistake, and violet eyes slipped closed as he quickly tried to reel himself in. after all, despite their conflicting feelings on the matter, leon was simply trying to pay him a compliment. ( and what sort of ungrateful brat would bede be if he threw it back in his face? ) ❝ in any case, i suppose i should thank you. ❞ a more neutral tone, this time — that was better. ❝ you were the one who made the call to humor me. i understand my actions weren’t especially... shall we say, traditional? ❞
he pretended to cough, hiding his mouth behind a hand. ❝ ... though it would have been more impressive had i actually won. ❞
