before the apocalypse
The silence was so deafening, awkwardness filled the air. Everyone in the lecture hall stared as your crush, Lee Eun Hyuk, turned down another student. It was especially awkward as the person sitting next to him to experience this. You could only watch as her face dropped. She pouted at his response, setting down the box of chocolates before running out in embarrassment.
Thankfully for her, class had already ended and everyone was starting to file out, moving on to the next thing. Their next lecture, or the next topic. People tended to move on quickly.
"Do you want them?" The question caught you off guard. Or rather, the person who was asking you caught you off guard. Eun Hyuk pushed the box of chocolates towards you before zipping his book bag shut and putting it over his shoulder.
He had never spoken to you before this very moment. The only times you remember interacting with him were passing papers down the row or setting a pen down in front of him when he was struggling to find one. Even then, those interactions were just noises of appreciation or acknowledgment.
You weren't sure how to reply. "If you don't want them I'll just have to throw them away."
"Oh. Umm, sure. Thank you." You take the box and pack up your things to leave as well. Eun Hyuk had already left, but you were sure you would see him in a few hours in the library as usual. Before you leave, however, you find yourself accidentally stepping on something. You look down to find a pencil case. You had seen it before, it belonged to Eun Hyuk.
Now, you had an excuse to talk to him in the library instead of admiring from afar as usual.
You continued about your day as normal but you were looking forward to your time in the library. As you excepted, Eun Hyuk was already sitting in his usual seat. He has his head buried in a textbook, not even realizing when you stepped up to his table.
You build up the courage and pull out the chair in front of him. It is then that he looks up. His expression is blank, and you suddenly feel the need to justify your existence in the library.
"You left your pencil case in the lecture hall this morning." You say quickly, pulling it out of your book bag.
"Thank you." He said, reaching out to take it from you still with a blank expression. "I was hoping I would find it soon. I wasn't able to take notes in my last lecture."
"Well, I also wanted to thank you for the chocolates. They were very sweet."
"Well, they're chocolates." He replied.
You weren't sure how to reply. "I still wanted to say thank you." You paused and took a few deep breaths, trying to work up the courage to ask the next question.
"Are you okay?" You look back up from your concentration to see him-- concern adorning his face as he searches yours for a sign of something.
"Yeah, sorry."
"Well, you didn't sound okay." He continues, his voice sounding genuine worry. "You can tell me anything that's happening to you if you feel bad. I'm a medical student, I can help."
You're surprised by his concern. "Yeah, I will. Thank you. But I was just working up the courage to ask you if I could study here, with you. I always see you here at the same hours as me. So..." You're not sure how to continue.
"Yeah, I've seen you. You sit over in that corner." He points to your usual spot. You nod. "Sure, I don't see why not. You're nice-- you've helped me with my pens more than once."
Wow, he remembered that.
As the weeks passed, you and Eun Hyuk started to get closer. You would talk during and after class and continue your conversations during your study time in the library. You eventually called each other friends, could be seen doing everything together around campus. Your newfound friendship exposed you to a different side of Eun Hyuk. A caring, beautiful, human side the complete opposite of his cold and blank exterior.
You never worked up the courage to tell him your true feelings before he had to drop out to financially support his sister. However, you made sure to stay in contact and would usually visit him and his sister, Eun yu, weekly. You gave him your notes and kept him updated about the things happening in school in hopes that he would be able to come back and accomplish his dream some day.
during the apocalypse
You had been stuck in Eun Hyuk's apartment building for a few days. In the past few days you had witnessed hell. People were dying left and right, the monsters outside killed everyone in sight. There was no way for anyone to leave.
You had been visiting Eun Hyuk the day before the beginning and were set to leave in the morning with him, only to find yourselves locked in. You had already seen him almost be dragged out and killed by a monster.
There was no way to contact anyone outside. Everyone was scared, unsure of their futures. Somehow, Eun Hyuk had been assigned as the natural leader of the building.
Although this position seemed to suit him, knowing that his relationship with his sister was already rough you were sure being away would only make it worse. So you made it your mission talk to both of them daily, keep them updated on each other, and reassure them that the other cared deeply about them. It was exhausting, but you made sure to do it for them. Because you cared about them. They were the most important thing to you now.
One day, you are finally able to relax with Eun Hyuk in the security room. He is sitting, watching the cameras, something he had been doing for a while, when you walked in with food.
"You should take a break," You stated, setting his ration onto the table before him.
"I will later." He responded, although he pulled the food closer. "Thank you."
You sit down on the couch near the wall. "Eun Hyuk?"
He turned around when you said his name. "Don't you miss anything? You know, like. Music. Trees?"
"Why are you asking me this?"
"Do you remember what you told me the day we first started talking?"
He shrugs and pull fully pulls his attention from the screens to you.
"You said I could tell you anything because you were a medical student. You said you could help me." He stands up and makes his way toward you, sitting next to you on the couch.
He is concerned, "Why? Are you feeling sick?" He looks at your face, searching for some sign of discomfort.
"No. That's not it. I just-- I miss those times, you know?" He nods, but continues searching for signs of discomfort.
"Back then. That day. You got a confession from someone."
He tilts his head, "I did?"
"Yeah, you don't remember that?" He stays silent for a few minutes, thinking.
"I think so. I'm pretty sure I rejected her. The girl with the chocolate box." You nod. "Well, what about that?"
"Back then, we had the freedom to reject and explore as we pleased. Not anymore. You know, I regret not telling you something before this whole thing happened.
He's confused, but you sit up straight, taking a few deep breaths. You weren't sure if you should continue. You were so close to him now, although you still harbored those romantic feelings for him. They only grew starting that day. But now, you were stuck in this apartment building with him. You were friends, and he was the leader.
"You're doing it again." He continues, putting his hand up to your forehead to try to check your temperature.
"What?"
"The same rapid breathing thing you did that day. Are you sure you're okay?"
"Yeah. I just-- I just have something to confess to you."
"Alright?"
"I like you. Like, I love you. And I've been feeling this way for a while." He is taken aback, but not doesn't seem mad or disappointed. You're confused. Scared.
However, you are relieved when he suddenly presses his lips onto yours. It's brief-- only a small peck. But it means everything to you. "I feel the same way about you."
"Oh?--"
"I'm not sure when it happened," He confessed, "But I like you, too." You smiled and pulled him closer, pressing your lips onto his.
"I know it probably isn't the best time to do this," He continues, "But do you want to be my girlfriend?"
"That would be amazing. Absolutely, yes." You answered with enthusiasm.
It would not be for long, but the both of you stayed there, in that room, wrapped in each other's arms. You guys talked about everything and anything. You remembered both the good and bad times. No matter what would happen next, this was one of the best days the both of you had just had the best day in a while.
