The beautiful effigy of Charles of Egmond (1467-1538), Duke of Guelders and Count of Zutphen, in full armour illuminated by the light of the autumn sun. Charles’ tomb and effigy in the Eusebiuskerk in Arnhem miraculously survived the fires that destroyed most of the church. Originally his tomb of black marble and alabaster stood above the crypt where Charles was buried in. It is currently partially dismantled for restoration and cleaning. Charles of Egmond reigned over the Duchy of Guelders from 1492 until his death. His grandfather had squandered his titles for a loan of 300.000 gold guilders from Duke Charles the Bold of Burgundy (r. 1467-1477), who gained the titles in 1473. The Burgundians lost their hold on the Duchy after Charles the Bold’s death in the Battle of Nancy, but never gave up their claims; Maximilian I of Austria, his son Philip the Fair and later his grandson Charles V fought Charles of Egmond and his notorious military commander Maarten van Rossum in the so-called Guelders Wars (1502-1543). The Saint Eusebius’ Church in Arnhem was ravaged in September 1944 during the Battle of Arnhem, which was part of Operation Market Garden. Fire had destroyed most of the interior and the roof. The tower was severely damaged and collapsed during the winter of 1944-1945, destroying most of the vault of the nave. The church was rebuilt between 1947 and 1964. The original ‘Eusebiuskerk’ was built in the 15th and 16th century. Er is een kerk in Arnhem…..

Er is een kerk in Arnhem zo worden de woorden vertaald uit “Est in Arneym ecclesia” van het jaar 893. Het eerste document waarin de kerk wordt genoemd in onze Arnhemse binnenstad. Het ging toen over de St Maartenskerk.

Een andere grotere kerk werd gebouwd op dezelfde plek omstreeks 1452. Maar net als nu liep ook toen het bezoek aan de kerk enorm terug. Met het binnenhalen van een reliek, schedel…

Het klinkt weer als vanouds

Het klinkt weer als vanouds

Wie vanaf maandag goed zijn oren heeft opengehouden hoorde al dat het carillon van de Eusebiuskerk speelde. Door een blikseminslag in 2017 was het in de Arnhemse binnenstad stil en hoorde men alleen nog in de verte het carillon van het provinciehuis op De Markt.

Met het in gebruik nemen van een nieuwe computer zal elk kwartier weer even het carillon voorbijgangers er aan herinneren dat de tijd…
