4 Steps to Hiring a Wedding Planner
Couples often believe that they can plan their own wedding until they are knee-deep in decor and florals. We HIGHLY recommend hiring a PROFESSIONAL planner for your big day (not your friend or coworker who loves Pinterest) but before you dive head first, there are a few things you need to figure out before you hire a planner.
1. Do Your Homework
Check out local prospective planners' websites for photos of recent weddings they have done to help narrow down your list. While you’re there, check to see what past clients have to say and what they offer. Some planners solely do “day of” planning while others will take charge of florals and catering for you themselves. If all the weddings they have planned are over-the-top and you're looking for a small, intimate gathering, they might not be the right person for you.
2. Call Your Favorites
Call your top three or four picks to confirm the following: types of planning services they offer, names of vendors they have worked with, wedding date availability, and pricing. Ask their typical price range and/or cost of the average wedding they plan). If their answers fit your budget and your overall vision, set up appointments to meet with each of them.
3. Do Your Research
Collect any and all pictures, inspiration and fabrics that you want as part of your big day. Next, look up the vendors that the planners you are looking to hire work with and see what their clients say and how much they cost. Lastly, research any venues you are interested in. See if they themselves have planners that they recommend and how their entire operation runs. This will save you time later.
4. Meet Up
Make meetings with the potential planners to see how you vibe. Look at their personalities-is this someone you can work with intimately for months at a time? Voice your ideas about your style and colors and see how the planner(s) responds—ask any questions you may have and see what they say about past experiences. A good planner should be able to listen to your thoughts and come up with a plan to make your wedding something truly unique and memorable.
