hiiii!! there is book where the main character is a girl and it's set in a future where the earth is dying and she is having a crisis abt whether or not to go on the ship that will travel the stars at the speed of light (dont remember why) and while she's having this crisis in a park an elderly lady sits next to her and convinces her to go because it'll be an adventure and she goes and somehow travels for so long that she witnesses the death of the universe while never aging/aging slowly and then the universe loops back again and by the time it's the same day she left on the ship SHES THE OLD LADY IN THE PARK??? i can only remember the bench scene really because it stuck with me but it was def published in the late 1990s or early 2000s and had a pink cover this is my white whale of a book

there's a book I LOVED as a kid but can't find. I think it's part of a series? it's about a boy who finds I THINK a cube, but definitely some kind of alien artifact. he takes it home and does something to it (builds something with it? tries to open it? puts it in the window? I don't remember) and that night an alien lands in his yard. the alien was somehow summoned by the cube- I forget if it was a batman-symbol type thing or if the alien had lost the cube and was trying to take it back. the boy begs the alien to let him come to space and the alien refuses at first, he's not supposed to be on earth or pick up humans or something like that, but finally agrees for one trip (that then I assume lasts longer than expected because of Plot).

I dont remember the plot beyond that. I do remember two other details: one, a scene where they get pulled over or boarded or something by like, alien cops, and the boy has to hide because the alien would get in trouble if they found him on his ship. the other detail is that I distinctly remember the alien being described as furry?? it was mentioned I think multiple times that he had soft comforting fur.

The problem with "you deserve better"

I know, I know. I hate 50 Shades of Grey. And Twilight. But one of the criticisms I keep reading against the upcoming movie is that “you deserve better.”

And I’m not about that. I’m not about book shaming. Or movie shaming. Or shaming of any kind, including slut shaming. You should be able to do and read and see what you want, without people giving you shit about it.

Just like when a friend has a fun fling, you don’t say “WTF were you thinking?!?” You say “Were you safe and did you have fun?” When a friend says they’re reading 50 Shades I don’t say “Why are you reading that trash?” I instead say, “Interesting, what do you like about it?” And also “I’m concerned with how it incorrectly portrays BDSM and how Christian Grey’s actions are both abusive and stalkerish, but I understand that it’s fun and exciting to read.”

Saying something like that might actually lead to a conversation. They might ask for recommendations of something to read next. But if you book shame your friend they might never want to talk to you about books again.

I am not perfect. I read some poorly written books that are fun and exciting. I play candy crush. My musical tastes are neither innovative nor exciting. And that’s fine. But I don’t want people telling me that it’s wrong for me to enjoy something. There’s so little joy in the day to day grind. Let people be happy.

Also I promise my blog is a judgement free zone when it comes to reading material.

I'm currently absolutely devouring A Discovery of Witches even if I do find it to be a better written more literary Twilight. And when Twilight was being published I devoured that "because I am (at the time) a teen librarian who needs to know what they're reading" - but really because they're delicious literary candy.

Read what you want. Enjoy what you want. And please forgive me if I complain about something you love. Chances are that I am loving it too. I'm just complainey.
