My co-worker and I both got emergency calls around midnight last night but we couldn’t take the police with us bc the police didn’t think our “little welfare visits” were important enough to escort us so my supervisor made us do the visits together so we wouldn’t be knocking on people’s doors by ourselves
We did my visit first bc it was closer then we headed out to my co-worker’s call, I pulled up to the road that led to the house and we both started cussing up a storm because 1) this road was out in the middle of fucking nowhere 2) it was a dead end, one-lane dirt road 3) surrounded by acres and acres of woods 4) with zero houses around it/near it/within screaming distance of it, so it was legit straight out of a scene from Wrong Turn, and what made it worse is that as soon as I turned onto the road we were overrun by dogs who followed us the rest of the way down and my co-worker (who is deathly afraid of dogs) went, “Natalie, I ain’t even playing right now, I’ll pay you $50 to do this visit for me”
I was scared af too (not by the dogs, but the possibility of getting serial-killed by their incest-loving owners) but I also really like money and buying things so I channeled every brave lesbian character I could think of at 1am on a Tuesday to do this fucking visit by myself
So I got out of the car, told the dogs to git (they got) then I knocked on the piece of siding that someone had made into a make-shift front door but nothing happened, I knocked again but louder and still nothing happened so I walked to the back of the house (I sure as shit did That White Thing™) to knock on the back door only to find out there wasn’t a back door at all which meant I put myself in the most isolated portion of the entire place for nothing, so I power walked back to the car, shaking like a leaf in a hurricane, told my co-worker, “They ain’t home” then I completed the sickest, most beautiful 3 point turn I’ve ever done in my life and drove back to the office
tl;dr: I got paid $50 to knock on a door
