(starting to despise the calendar’s pleaty designs)
Butterfly by Evi Binzinger.
"Butterfly" (Swallowtail) designed by Evi Binzinger. Video tutorial here by Leyla Torres. Both models are made from chiyogami; the top is a 15x15 cm square and the bottom is a 7.5x7.5 cm square.
There are approximately 5 quintillion butterfly models out there from simple to difficult, the abstract to the so realistic you think they're going to up and fly away. This one is fairly simply and falls somewhere in the middle of the realism spectrum, but I really like the silhouette of it. The rounded bottom keeps it from being too blocky, while the 3D base gives the illusion of a body without actually having to sculpt out a body. Also, I realize that it's hard to have size perspective on these sometimes, so I put a quarter next to the second butterfly to give you a better idea of the finished model's size.
