EWH Institute participants repair 75% of the equipment they encounter. The equipment they repair most often are oxygen concentrators, suction pumps, and patient monitors.

Favourite moment: Gen and I had a ventilator that functions when connected to power but the display screen would not turn on. We took hours to disassemble the ventilator with Connor and analyse all the wire connections. In the end we realised that the circuit board for the switch was not working. We replaced the switch by looking in scrap pile of circuit boards and soldered the working switch onto the ventilator circuit board. The display turned on! - Zara, January Institute in Cambodia 2020

Our Institute participants work on a lot of autoclaves. From this year’s Cambodia program, Kevin H shares: “Giant pressure cookers, also known as autoclaves, generally have a lot of oxidation on their surfaces due to the constant exposure to water. Here is Clayton from group 2 preparing the toolkit to open the cover to see the extent of the dirt and grime built up over the years in this particular autoclave. We then do a thorough decantation of the pot and quick wipe.” If too much build up happens, the autoclave can break, preventing hospitals from properly sterilizing their tools. We’ve also included a before and after picture, along with a few other autoclave repairs from Cambodia.
