Dave Chapman, MD of Blaydon Communications in Newcastle has just fulfilled and achieved a cheeky challenge presented to him last year 2003 during a visit by Andy Austin-Brown of KV2 Audio.
Andy relates: I walked into Dave’s office knowing that he hates Mobile phones, pretending to be talking on it just for a wind up.
Quite excitedly he politely but firmly challenged me to ‘take it away’ and after putting it in my pocket, I immediately challenged him to find a quality demonstration, and customer to allow me to show the new KV2 Audio product.
Just a month later Dave requested a KV2 presentation for Carl Hornsby, Operations Manager of Ultimate Leisure, at The Beach, an existing unit in Sunderland; needless to say, both were duly impressed.
Carl subsequently paid a visit to the KV2 stand at Plasa and announced plans for a new venue in Leeds City Centre. Here he invited both Dave and Andy to produce a viable and cost effective audio design for what was going to be one of their flagship venues.
Both attended site in early December and Andy presented the design and specification in January 2004.
Carl liked the ideas regarding attention to sightlines, aesthetics and methods of operation, but was particularly intrigued by the coverage and SPL levels that were assured. Of particular note was that considerably less speaker units were being proposed than Carl had previously seen in his other installations. Indeed, Carl was to seriously question these details before acceptance, but once convinced instructed Blaydon Communications to commence installation in Early June.
The site, a 160 year old decommissioned C of E church, located in the immediate vicinity of Leeds University, the large open scale proportions, vaulted ceilings and monolithic stoneware presented scary if fascinating acoustical challenges as well as minor details such as location fixings cable runs and aesthetic sympathies.
The audio system is configured into five main zones, all completely controllable and addressable via the simple use of a Bi amp Audia Flex.
Consisting of the Main bar/open floor area, a dedicated Dance floor, a secluded seating area, a large open mezzanine area and a lower bar floor area under the mezzanine, they are all interactive areas that have to provide the highest sound quality at all times regardless of input or operating level.
A Bar and upper mezzanine area is provided in a separate part of the site, formally the Sunday school.
Whilst the clear intention is to attract the ready made customer base of Students both young and mature, constantly streaming up and down the Headingly Road, the site will operate fully through the whole working day, demanding a high degree of flexibility from the audio system again in performance and operation.
To provide such abilities, KV2 Audio ES1.0 and ES2.5 with ES1.8 Subwoofers all controlled from EPAK2500 Amplifiers are utilised in the main open auditorium, bar and open floor area of the church.
All other areas utilise a select and diverse mix of KV2 EX10 and EX2.2 as well as EX2.5 subwoofers, all active driven and independently controllable to their location and environment. A total of 35 KV2 Audio speakers were utilised for the installation.

The Corner House
The Famous Corner house in Middlesbrough, owned by Ladhar Leisure has undergone a major refurbishment including the upgrading to KV2 of the Main Club sound system.
As the first installation Worldwide of the new EX 12 cabinets, launched at Plasa, this was a real opportunity for Jonathan Reece Farren from KV2 to put them to the test. "It was in at the deep end for the EX 12, offering full range rear dance floor support to a very powerful front left and right ES system. Even having tested the units over the last few months and hearing people's comments at Plasa, it was still reassuring to see the box hard at work, producing incredible levels in such a clean and dynamic way".
Running alongside the new Kv2 Audio EX 12's are ES 1.0's / ES 1.8's FOH, and KV2 Audio EX 10's for the bar and peripheral areas.
A challenging room acoustically, built underneath the old railway arches. Yet again the KV2 system performed brilliantly straight out of the box, without the need for hours of set up and Equalisation.
Reece- Farren continues "We love peoples comments about the huge sound produced by our systems, but the danger is that with the exceptionally low inherent distortion the uninitiated are sometimes encouraged to push it to extremely high pressure levels, levels which are not only dangerous to the paying customers, but where many other systems would fold in half and collapse. Fortunately the low distortion characteristics of our system offer an equal benefit at lower operating levels and, with DJ education, this helps create a very balanced sound no matter what type of music is played, or at what operating level".
Having run for the last five years successfully on the Fussion Dance system, a previous incarnation from the KV2 Design team, everybody was confident that the KV2 system would truly offer an upgrade path of both quality and reliability. Owner Barry Ladhar had been concerned by pending changes in the law on acceptable noise levels for audiences within bars and Clubs. Barry comments "Our concern is obviously customer safety and enjoyment as well as the quality of the sound, but we needed to ensure that the right atmosphere was created in all areas. It helps having a system that delivers exceptional clarity and coverage, even at low volumes, and looking forward, with the set up at the corner house, everything is now in place to follow any changes in legislation as they arrive"
Operating seven nights a week, the new interior design was complimented with an upgrading of the Martin Professional Lighting system, as well as a new Allen and Heath DJ mixer, and a Show Magic Lighting controller.

A series of refurbished 18th century warehouse buildings, Lucorum is an interesting concept of a venue that is a shopping centre / Café by day, restaurant/ Bar by mid week night, and a full on Club at the weekends.
Being given the brief of a very discreet speaker system that would not look out of place in the afternoon tea-room setting, but have the necessary power to satisfy several hundred clubbers on a weekend represented no mean feat for Yorkshire based installers 52nd street. But Having heard the KV2 system at Plasa, EX was unanimously chosen as the right product for the job.
In an almost Alfresco environment, but with a glass roof and stone walls, the acoustics could be described as, at best challenging; but by carefully positioning four Ex 10 speakers and adding the weight of two EX 2.5 double 15" active subs, reflections and subsequent issues of poor intelligibility were minimised. Whilst waiting for the first deliveries of EX product last month Shaun had provided a temporary, larger format Club system for the Weekend nights. This consisted of four processed "better known brand" boxes with 15" and 2" along with four horn loaded 18's underneath, all run off Crown amplification.
That in itself set a precedent for both quality and level but from the first switch on of the Ex system there was a real sense that something special had happened with the music stepping up to a whole new level. Shaun comments that people have stopped him in the street, as Barnsley is his home town, to ask if he was responsible for the New sound system at Lucorum. He adds "I'd like to take the credit, but at the end of the day it's about as plug and play as you can get, George and the team have just produced another great sounding system, it's incredible for the size"
The first few Saturday nights saw percussionists, Sax players, and top name DJ's put the system through its paces, with nothing but good reports and smiles all round.
