On the one hand, new books. They’re just so new and clean and no one else has ever read them, ever ever, and it’s like they were made just for you. Other people may read them, yes, may have read this story before you, even, but this copy is yours, just yours, and you have had an experience with it no-one else ever will.
On the other hand, used books. Used books are an adventure. Used books are sitting down with the shadowy figure in the corner, buying them a drink, and hearing their stories. Used books are finding tales that maybe aren’t even sold new anymore, delving into the history of a genre. Used books are seeing the marks left by previous readers, and wondering what their stories were.
(It is, of course, a given that I will fight any and everyone to get my grubby little paws on an ex-library book. It’s mine now, no due dates, my book, no guilt, my library book, mINe.)
Rats, Robert Sullivan (M, 20s, maroon tank top, shorts, work boots, ex-library copy, C train)
