Below the cut is where I talk about the events today in the TS fandom relating to Virgil’s skirt. TLDR is at the very bottom, second to last paragraph. A lot of this is me trying to make a point and failing miserably so the TLDR might be your best bet. I’ll go over this when I’m not exausted but for now this is it.
Just going to say this now and be done with it. I’m officially logging off for the night after this because I’m too tired for this shit.
People can wear what they want, how they want. End of the fucking story. If you want to critique them, fine. You have that right and the ability, but don’t be mean and certainly don’t relate your point to the things that they can’t change in less than two seconds and have been openly insecure about. And definitely don’t send it directly to them Jesus Christ Almighty where did basic manners go. In fact as I’m lookng at this how about friendly suggestions and advice instead of straight-up critiquing. That might be better for everyone in the long run. Saying “Try doing this....” or “Maybe this might be better ....” instead of “This needs to be like...” or “This is too ...” may make all the difference.
What I’m trying to get at is what happened today (whether you know or not) wasn’t okay and the people who did it deserved to be scolded. But no one deserves the cruelty of the internet. No one. This shit can get harsh and out of hand really quickly. It’s easy to cross the line when you can’t see the people behind the screens. It’s just as easy when you see the people behind the screens everyday in the position of a fan. Not friend, not family, not mentor to apprentice or whatever. Fan. AKA, they don’t know you and you only see what they want you to see. Sure, they interact with you but they still don’t know you.
I want to be very clear. Those jokes crossed a serious line and should never have been made and will never be ok. But the person apologized and took responsibility. Genuinely. And the day that stops meaning something is the day when I become very scared for humanity.
I was browsing tumblr, got overwhelmed and uncomfortable, then moved to twitter. Big fucking mistake. People were rightfully pissed. And that’s it. No one looked any further than the tweet with the tumblr ask and response unless it was to chew out the asker. No one did any digging and if they did no one mentioned the people who made the mistake apologized. No one. Completely skipped over.
I’m ending this with the wise words of Mr. Logan Sanders himself, “If Thomas’ friends immediatly and uncritically accept the first negative thing they’re told about Thomas as a fact, without first pursuing his perspective on what happened, then I’m doubfult that those friendships would have lasted under any circumstances.” Now use that quote but with the current situation.
TLDR: Don’t be an asshole in telling someone not to be an asshole. That’s literally all I’m trying to say. That’s it. I don’t care how credible the thing you see looks (in this situation it was completely true) always check for yourself. Do the research and make your own opinion.
It’s 2am where I’m at and I have to get up early in the morning. So excuse my rambling and points whose marks I most likely missed a mile off. But I needed to adress this. I’ll look over this later if I have the time and attempt to make things clearer on my end.
Oh, sweet child of the sea and law! Your father guards the borders of the sea, and your mother crowned of wisdom and war. A life of greatness stands before you dictated by emotion, balanced thought, and logic. No man can tell you what realm you preside over, but look to themes of rivalry and ports as you grow into your power.
