Chapter 8: Power to Break Free
Power to Break Free
Darkness. The same darkness he’d woken up to countless times for what felt like an eternity. His joints and back throbbed in pain from being held in the same position on the hard bed. If it could be called that.
After a couple of minutes, his thoughts oriented and he realized that something was off today. What he could see of the room looked the same, and his wrists and ankles were still bound, but something was notably different.
No.
He felt different. Lighter.
Kyungsoo felt more like himself and more alive than he had felt in forever. His mind went to the blue drug that had constantly been pumped into his system and the expressionless women that were always here to replace the empty IV bag with a new one before his mind had time to clear. His alertness meant they would most likely be coming soon to replace it and he braced himself for it.
Fighting the anxiety, he tested the restraints for any give but found none, and as time ticked on he dared to reach for his powers. It was like hitting a wall. There was a firm barrier keeping him from accessing them.
A rumbling suddenly shook the room, rattling the metal around him and the next second the room was filled with sirens and flashing red lights that made him squint at the sudden illumination. There were small clicks, barely noticeable through the sirens, but he’d felt them against his skin. Slowly, Kyungsoo lifted his hand, too tired to hope too much, but there was no resistance and he brought his hand in front of his face, then lifted the other one, observing them in the red light. He dropped them to the bed then slowly pushed himself up, the action exerting more energy than it should have. After some deep breaths, he swung his legs over the edge of the bed and carefully placed his feet against the cold floor. His legs nearly gave out as he stood and he took several more deep breaths, using the bed to brace himself as he took a couple of steps towards the end of it. Once he felt more sturdy he stepped toward the door that was blinking in and out of existence in the flashing lights.
Another rumble shook the floor and he lurched forward, stumbling to the wall so that he could steady himself. Dust and gravel fell on his head as the rumbling continued and the door suddenly opened. He stepped away out of caution, ready for a fight if someone was coming to restrain him. When no one entered, he slowly made his way to the door and peeked out into the hall. There were other open doorways and he made eye contact with several of his brothers as they poked their own heads out and looked at each other in disbelief.
Another rumble sent a few of them to the ground as the concrete walls and ceiling cracked, filling the small space with dust. Kyungsoo did what he could to make it across the hall to Baekhyun, willing his legs to stay steady against the shaking.
“Hyung, are you okay?” he asked the light-wielder. Baekhyun nodded his head slowly, but he was pale and his eyes were fluttering closed, a sign that he would pass out at any moment. Kyungsoo slipped his arm around Baekhyun and helped him to his feet, noticing just how thin he was.
“Baekhyun, Kyungsoo,” the eldest called, walking up to them. “We need to get moving.” He looked at Kyungsoo. “Will you be okay?”
Kyungsoo nodded. “I’ve got him.” He looked over at the others. “Is everyone here?”
Minseok shook his head. “Five are missing, including Suho.” Another rumble shook the building and part of the ceiling fell a few feet away. “We’ll try to find them while we look for an exit, but the rest of the rooms are empty and we can’t stay here.” He turned and waved the others over. “Let’s go. Everyone stay together,” he shouted, then took off down the hall, checking each door he came across for the missing brothers until the hall emptied into a large room that had several more open doorways lining the round walls.
Kyungsoo lowered Baekhyun to the floor and against the wall so that he could join the others as they began checking the rooms.
“I found clothes!” Sehun shouted, disappearing into a room. Some of the others followed, ready to be out of the scratchy white clothes they had been put in. Kyungsoo was about to follow, ready to avoid the lab he had just found. He stopped, however, when his foot splashed into a puddle of water that was spreading out onto the floor from inside the room. Putting new clothes on hold, he decided to explore into the sterile white lab. He rounded a large machine, giving it plenty of room as he followed where the water was coming from. An open capsule machine sat farther in and their missing leader was slumped inside of it.
“Hyung!” Kyungsoo ran to the man, nearly slipping on the wet floor. He shook Suho’s shoulder, trying to wake him. “I found Suho!” he shouted to get the others’ attention, trying to wake him while panic started to grow. There was an IV poked into his arms and Kyungsoo removed it as gently as he could. “Suho hyung.”
“How is he?” Minseok asked as he rushed in and knelt beside Kyungsoo.
“He’s not waking up,” Kyungsoo said, turning frantically to the eldest.
“Deep breath, Soo,” Minseok said. He placed two fingers on the leader’s neck, and let out a breath when he found a pulse. He placed a hand on Suho’s shoulder and shook it lightly, then moved some wet hair out of his face. “He’s soaked.”
“They must have been keeping him in a tank,” Kyungsoo said. “Even for him though….”
“That explains all of the water,” Minseok said and placed his hand back on Suho’s shoulder. “Vīyâ’yėn*, we need you. Please, wake up.”
After a few seconds, Suho groaned and moved slowly, blinking his eyes open. He opened his mouth to speak but ended up in a coughing fit and Minseok tried to ignore the amount of water that was being expelled, instead focussing on patting his back.
“What’s going on?” Suho tried again, his voice raspy. “How…?
“We’re escaping,” Minseok explained simply, helping him up. “We’re not sure what’s going on except that the place is coming down and all of our restraints and cell doors opened.” Kyungsoo took the leader’s other side and they led him out.
“Is everyone okay?” Suho asked.
“We have four missing,” Minseok said. “Baekhyun is in bad shape and Chanyeol said he’s having a hard time seeing. The others have various levels of weakness and disorientation but are up and moving. Sehun found some clothes so everyone’s changing.”
Suho nodded at the update and slipped away from them as he grew more steady on his feet. “It would be nice to change into something more comfortable,” he said.
“And dry,” Minseok said, patting him on the back. “Seems like all of our powers are null right now.”
“Not surprising considering the things they put us through—and the drugs. There’s no telling what they did to us,” Kyungsoo added.
They made their way out of the room, Minseok taking the lead toward the room that Sehun had found earlier. Kyungsoo paused to get Baekhyun, but he was no longer against the wall so Kyungsoo continued on into the room with the others in hopes that he would be there.
Clothes were everywhere in what appeared to be an open-shelf locker room. Sehun, Chen, and Baekhyun were among the mess, with Sehun handing clothes to Chen who was helping a barely conscious Baekhyun into them.
“How’s Baekhyun doing?” Suho asked and Sehun’s eyes jumped to the leader.
“Hyung! You’re okay!” The maknae ran over and threw his arms around Suho who hugged him back, patting him a couple of times.
“It’s good to see you,” Suho said, then he dropped his arms, though Sehun kept him in a side hug.
“It’s good to see you, Hyung,” Chen said. “Baek’s not doing great as you can see. Light deprivation would be my guess. There’s no sign of Lay, but even if he were here all of our powers are gone, so he probably wouldn’t be able to help with healing.”
“And the others?” Suho asked and Sehun finally detached from his side.
“Jongin found an armory, so he and Chanyeol went to assess and gather weapons,” Chen explained as Sehun handed some clothes to Suho.
“I’ll see how it’s going,” Minseok said, now changed but still adjusting the clothes as he headed out. Kyungsoo followed after him without a word, throwing on a vest.
“We’ll meet you in there,” Suho said.
“Anyone else find it odd that they have such a wide variety of men’s clothing?” Sehun asked, holding out a belted navy cargo jacket to Chen.
“They’re surprisingly varied, too,” Suho said, holding up cargo pants and a sailor hat that seemed very out of place. He put the hat down and then checked the size of the pants. “These will work.”
“Here, Hyung,” Sehun said, handing over a white button-down. He then picked up the discarded hat and observed it. After a second, he chuckled and held it out to Chen, who was slipping on a jacket.
“I’m not wearing that,” Chen said with a lifted brow.
Sehun rolled his eyes with a huff. “Obviously.”
“Aaaah,” Chen said, taking it with a smirk and then placing it on Baekhyun’s head. “Perfect.”
“You know he’s going to actually like that, right?” Suho said. They both shrugged and Suho shook his head at their antics then threw on a jacket. “Are we ready to join the others?”
“Yep,” Chen said, then he knelt down and draped one of Baekhyun’s arms over his shoulders and wrapped an arm around his brother’s back. “Alright Baek, alley-oop.” He pulled Baekhyun to his feet, stumbling when Baekhyun’s legs refused to hold him up. Suho rushed to take Baekhyun’s other side and they started making their way out with Sehun in tow.
The armory was the next room over and the others were busy loading weapons and gathering them on a large table set in the center of the room. Chen and Suho took Baekhyun over to one of the benches lining the room and eased him onto it, then Chen went to look over the shelves that were holding gadgets and tech that Suho couldn’t recognize.
“Anything useful?” Suho asked, walking up to the table where Chanyeol and Jongin were focused on checking over the weapons.
“Hyung!” the two shouted in unison, abandoning the guns in order to wrap him in a hug as their eyes misted.
He patted their backs a couple of times then gently pushed them away and ruffled their hair. “What did you find?” he asked as they pulled him forward.
“Plenty of guns,” Kai said.
“Other weapons too,” Chanyeol added. “Enough for a small army.”
“Let’s be thankful for our sakes,” Suho said.
Chanyeol picked up a gun and checked it over before handing it to the leader. “This one should work for you,” he said.
“Thank you.”
“I found handheld radios,” Sehun said as he bounded over and handed each of them a communication device. He held onto one and extended the extra-long antenna before turning it on.
“Wouldn’t they be able to listen in on us?” Suho asked.
“We can just change the channel and code from whatever they’re already set to,” Jongin said, messing with the buttons on his. “I doubt they would even think we’re using them if they do find out we escaped.”
“They’ll know if someone comes to get weapons,” Kyungsoo said. “It’s pretty obvious we raided the place, and someone obviously uses these weapons.”
“So, which gun do I get?” Sehun asked, reaching for one.
Chanyeol slapped his hand away. “Uh, uh. Not that one.”
Sehun rolled his eyes and reached for another gun, but Kai grabbed it first. “You know you’re only good with guns if you’re sniping,” Kai said and handed the gun to Kyungsoo.
“So you just want me to go out there without a weapon?” Sehun argued.
Chanyeol looked over another gun then held it out. “Here.” When Sehun reached for it he pulled it back a bit. “Don’t go shooting it randomly.”
“Right, right,” Sehun said, taking the gun to look it over.
Suho chuckled at the interaction then made his way over to Minseok who was looking over Baekhyun. “How’s he doing?” Suho asked.
“It’s hard to say,” Minseok responded, standing up. “He needs to get into some natural light.”
“We need to get out of here,” Suho said as he looked back over the others.
“I’ll take Sehun and we’ll scout for an exit while you all finish up here.”
Suho nodded.
“Sehunie!” Minseok called to the maknae. “Let’s go see if we can find a way out of here.”
“Coming,” Sehun said as he handed a couple of handheld radios to Chen.
“I’ll come too,” Kai said.
The three exited the room, fully equipped, and the rest focused on gathering what they needed as quickly as possible. Chanyeol and Chen were busy going over a gun that seemed to have advanced modifications on it when the floor shook with enough strength to send most of them to the ground with several of the weapons and equipment.
“We need to get out!” Suho said when it didn’t stop and the walls and ceiling began to break. “Now!”
“We’ve got a problem!” Sehun said from the doorway.
“Thanks. The building that’s trying to come down on our heads wasn’t enough of a hint,” Chen shouted as he gathered Baekhyun.
There were loud thuds like slow, heavy footfalls, the sound of a blast, and then an explosion as chunks of concrete shot in their direction. Kai and Minseok appeared beside Sehun. Kai turned back in the direction they had come from to shoot while Minseok reached out to help Chen with Baekhyun.
“What’s going on?” Suho asked as he and the rest made their way out of the room, guns raised and ready. Their heads tilted up slowly as they took in the massive robot that was heading in their direction, its metal appendages flailing about as it tore into the walls and ceiling.
“Some sort of security measure, maybe?” Kai said, continuing to shoot.
“Everyone move down the hall,” Suho commanded. “Chanyeol, help me cover our escape. Kai and Kyungsoo, stay with the others and cover them. Hyung, get Baekhyun out of here.”
Everyone followed his command without a word, making their retreat. He and Chanyeol moved slowly, trying to keep the robot at bay with as many shots as possible.
“We’re gonna run out of ammo before we destroy this thing,” Chanyeol shouted. “We’re not making a dent.”
The ground shook again, stronger this time. Suho and Chanyeol dove out of the way as the building fractured, dropping large parts of the wall and ceiling toward them. When the shaking stopped, Suho coughed and waved his hands around, trying to clear the air of the dust clouds billowing up around him. Still coughing, he pulled some safety glasses out of his pocket that he had grabbed and slipped them onto his face, hoping that they would help protect his eyes from the debris.
When the dust had settled more he looked around the surrounding area, calling for the others so as not to get any attention from the robot that he hoped had actually been squashed by the rubble. When he didn’t see anyone, he inched along a fallen wall to continue his search and grabbed the radio, hoping it would work properly. “Is everyone okay?” he asked.
A few of them responded, easing some of his anxiety. There was coughing nearby and he headed towards it. There were a couple of grumbled words and Suho smiled at the familiar voice.
“Kai,” he called out. “Are you okay?”
“Hyung!” Kai shouted and ran towards him through the dust. “I’m fine, but my radio got busted.”
“We can use mine,” Suho said, patting his shoulder. “Let’s find the others.”
Kai nodded and they started off in the direction that they had originally been heading. The ceilings were now completely gone in their area, but half-standing walls still blocked their view of the others.
“Wasn’t Chanyeol with you?” Kai asked as they picked around the debris.
“We got separated when the ceiling came down. What about the others?”
“Same problem.”
“There’s not much in the way of landmarks to ask the others where they are now that everything is gone.”
“Guys!”
They both turned sharply towards the voice. Chanyeol stood on the other side of a collapsed wall, waving his arms to get their attention. They waved back but there was too much rubble between them and it would take a while to navigate over to him. Before Suho could call over to him to make a plan, there was the sound of mechanics and rubble moving and they all braced for another quake. It didn’t come, so they turned towards the sound to see the robot making its way out of a pile of debris, sight set on them.
“Hit the deck!” Kai shouted, pulling Suho with him behind a wall as the robot shot a laser in their direction. When the laser stopped, Kai scooted forward to the other side of a larger hole in the wall and peaked out so that he could get a look at the robot. It turned towards him and he decked back into hiding, sending a grimace toward Suho with a shake of his head. They were pinned down unless its attention got pulled elsewhere.
“Hyung,” Kyungsoo spoke cautiously as Minseok messed with his gun, trying to figure out some of the features that didn’t seem quite normal. The sound of the stomping robot grew closer and Kyungsoo pushed himself further against the wall. “It’s going to hear you,” he hissed.
“We don’t know if it has sound receptors or not,” Minseok said, then started gathering cords and tech that was littering the ground. “We need to be prepared for it if it does find us. And knowing better if our guns have any extra firepower is a good start. Now, help me find something that we might be able to use against it.” Minseok stilled when the stomping came right up to their hiding place. He scooted closer to Kyungsoo, then waited and prayed it would pass by.
The arm suddenly came through the wall right in front of them, shooting concrete in their direction, but it was quickly retracted. They stayed as silent as possible. Minseok turned to Kyungsoo with a smile and a thumbs up to hopefully ease him a little bit. When the stomping started to move away, Minseok got back to work with what he had gathered, hoping for the best.
“Okay, I think I got something.” He smiled and plugged two groups of wires together, but a spark was the only warning he got to toss it away before it blew up in his face. Kyungsoo pulled him back against the wall as he fought away the disorientation, feeling slightly charred.
“Maybe don’t do that again,” Kyungsoo offered and he chuckled at the unamused tone.
“Yeah,” he agreed, “Maybe leave it to Chen, huh?”
“Leave what to me?” Chen asked, poking his head around a corner and sending their heart rates up at his sudden appearance. “You guys okay?” His eyes darted to the pile of burning tech and then back to them, noting the black marks on Minseok’s clothing.
“We are, now that hyung is done trying to blow us up,” Kyungsoo said.
“Want some help?” Chen asked.
“That would be great,” Minseok said, then he pointed to the tech. “I think those should be the right components to make something useful, I just didn’t wire them together properly. You still got Baekhyun?”
Chen nodded. “Bring the tech to me. I’ll look at it and you can look him over again,” he said. “I think he might be doing a little better now that we’re exposed to natural lighting.”
Minseok gathered what he could and made his way around to Chen and Baekhyun, then he dumped everything at Chen’s knees. He touched Baekhyun’s forehead and then checked his pulse, the stronger, steady rhythm giving him some relief.
Shots suddenly fired through the air and they all ducked. Kyungsoo yelped on the other side of the fallen wall.
“Where is everyone?” Sehun asked over the radio.
“Sehun! What did I say about the gun?” Chanyeol shouted.
“Well if I hadn’t been left alone I wouldn’t need to be defending myself, now would I?” Sehun shot back.
“You’re only going to draw it towards you,” Kyungsoo warned. “We’re pinned down now because of your shooting.”
“I’ll try and distract it,” Chanyeol said. “Stop shooting.”
“We can’t really move since we have Baekhyun,” Minseok chimed in. “Everyone try and make it over to us.”
“I have a plan,” Chen added.
“Hyung,” Kai whispered as the robot passed by them again. “Let’s try and make it to Sehun before heading over to the others. I think he should be on our way.”
Suho nodded and they started to pick their way along the walls again, working slowly to avoid being seen. There was another small quake and Suho stumbled to the ground, losing his glasses and radio in the process. He fumbled around for them, then he stood up triumphantly when he found them.
“Get down!” Kai shouted, pushing him back down and raising his gun as the robot aimed at them. He shot, but whatever the gun used as ammo had no effect, and he had to dodge out of the way as the robot sent a stream of flame toward him.
“Kai!” Suho shouted, trying to see past the stream of fire.
“I’m okay, Hyung,” Kai responded. “Go! I’ll cover you.”
Suho stood on shaking legs and stumbled away as quickly as he could while trying to pinpoint the direction to Sehun. Hopefully, it was away from the massive robot. He peeked over the debris he was now using as a hiding place to look for Kai and Chanyeol. They were taking turns popping into view and shooting to cause a distraction. Worried, but sure they were safe for the time being, Suho continued on his way.
There was a hushed bickering just ahead and he hurried as much as he dared.
“If you’d followed directions it wouldn’t have even come this way,” Kyungsoo was saying as they came into view.
Sehun silently mouthed back, a pout firmly in place.
“Are you guys okay?” he asked, ducking a bit more as he went towards them.
They looked up at him with wide eyes and he could see the flash of fear in them. He berated himself for startling them in this situation and smiled softly as he knelt by them.
‘“Hyuuung,” Sehun whined and Kyungsoo reached a hand forward then paused.
“Are you okay, Hyung?” Kyungsoo asked. “It looked like it was heading in your direction.”
“I’m okay,” Suho assured them. “Kyungsoo, can you lead the way back to the others?” Kyungsoo nodded. “Okay, let’s go then.” He ushered Sehun forward as they followed behind Kyungsoo. Suho kept checking their rear as they went, and at some point, they were joined by Chanyeol.
“The robot is heading towards them,” Chanyeol said hurriedly, now taking the rear. “I think it realized Kai and I were bait.”
“Let’s hurry,” Suho said.
“Oh good!” Minseok said as they rejoined them. “The gang’s back together.”
Kai was by his side with Baekhyun between them on the ground. It surprised Suho to see Kai already with them since the robot seemed to be still a ways off.
“Did anyone else notice that the robot has been using some of our powers?” Minseok asked, pulling something out of his pocket and then chucking it as far away from them as possible. “Fire, lightning, light, ice,” he finished explaining as an explosion went off and the rest of them jumped. He pulled another device out of his pocket and held it up. “I grabbed flash grenades.” He explained simply with a grin.
“Clever distraction,” Chanyeol said. “How many do you have left?”
“Just two.”
“Do you think the robot could be the reason we don’t have our powers?” Suho asked.
“I doubt it,” Minseok said. “My guess is that it’s a side effect of whatever drug they’ve been pumping into us.”
“Or whatever else they’ve done to us,” Kai added darkly.
“Considering the amount of advanced tech that they have, I wouldn’t be surprised if they created a power inhibitor…or a canceler of some kind. But, I think the robot would need to be closer to us for it to be effective," Chen said, not looking up from where he was still fiddling with wires and assembling random pieces of tech into a device.
“Hyung,” Kyungsoo said suddenly as he reached blindly for Minseok. “It’s coming back this way. The flash grenade.”
Minseok turned quickly to look past their shelter, grabbing the last two grenades from his pocket. The robot was indeed moving towards them, its appendage flailing even more now than it had been. He tossed the grenades as far as he could on either side of the robot. It flailed around in both directions but then spun around, giving its lens a full sweep of the area until it landed on them.
They ducked quickly, but by the sound of its thudding steps, it was too late.
“Chen,” Minseok called as panic grew.
“Seven more minutes.”
“Better make it five,” Suho said as they got in a line along their shelter, guns raised. When it got closer they opened fire, hoping for any result. No luck. The guns they had collected had little to no effect and their hearts dropped as the robot created a ball of energy at the end of its arm and took aim.
“Chen!” they all called, raising their weapons to shield them as best as they could.
“I’ve got it!” he shouted and jumped in front of them as it took the shot, the shield he was carrying absorbing the entire blast. When the robot stopped he smiled and shrugged as the giant shield glowed. He clicked something on the back and then braced himself as a beam shot back at the robot. It shook and rattled, parts spinning and flailing as it sparked and then stopped, collapsing as it could no longer hold itself up.
“What happened?”
“Did you destroy it?”
“Yes and no,” Chen answered as everyone came up to him. “Mix of short-circuiting and EMP. It hopefully won’t reactivate though.”
“Good,” Suho said.
Sehun jogged up to it, tapped it with his foot a couple of times, and then kicked it. Kai joined him and gave him a high five.
“Guys?” Baekhyun suddenly said and they all turned towards where he still sat. “What’s going on?”
They instantly crowded him, asking if he was okay as Minseok once again checked him over.
“How are you feeling?” Suho asked.
“Tired,” Baekhyun said. “Kind of funny…mmm…tingly? Where are we?”
“We’re still trying to figure that out,” Suho said.
“You’re doing better,” Minseok said. “Good. I was starting to get a little worried.”
“Good to have you back,” Chanyeol said, holding a hand out to Baekhyun to help him up. Baekhyun took his hand and then gasped. The rest all stepped back as his eyes started glowing. Light surrounded their grasped hands and they let go in shock, blinked at each other, and held hands again. The light appeared again, then it traveled up their arms. The others watched with bated breath as the two raised their free hands and summoned their powers.
“Our powers! They’re back!” Chanyeol cheered in triumph. He pulled Baekhyun up to his feet and then wrapped him in a hug.
Baekhyun laughed in relief and confusion. “I didn’t realize they were missing. What happened?”
“We’re not a hundred percent sure,” Minseok said. “Not sure what you did either.”
“You two hold the heart,” Suho said. His arms were crossed and his brows furrowed in thought. “That must be why you were able to reactivate them.”
“But we only have half of the heart between us,” Chanyeol said, crossing his own arms. “Would that be enough?”
“Must be,” Suho reasoned. If he was honest he really had no idea, but this guess was as good as any.
“In that case…” Baekhyun held out a hand to Minseok who took it without a word. Baekhyun closed his eyes and their hands started to glow much like what had happened with Chanyeol. Seeing the action, Chanyeol held out his own hand and Sehun quickly took it. They continued like that until everyone’s powers were restored and they could breathe just a little easier.
“Now that that’s done,” Sehun was the first to speak. “Anyone have any idea where we’re at?”
“All that matters is a destination,” Kai said, throwing an arm over Kyungsoo’s shoulder as he leaned heavily into his side. “Pick a place, Suho hyung, and I’ll get us there.”

Owl: Here is the final chapter! This chapter means a lot to me. Power was one of the mvs that got me into Exo. It's an mv and song that I still adore to this day. I knew I had to include it, and it was simultaneously one of the easiest and hardest chapters to write. On one hand, the mv is fleshed out really well and gives content on a silver platter. On the other hand, the things without context, like the weapons, clothes, and lack of Baekhyun for a good portion of it, all had to be answered. Not to mentioned how they get their powers back. Another exciting aspect is introducing something that Dragon has worked very hard on. A special language for our world! For the guardians and other beings. It's so fascinating and impressive. I can't begin to explain how it works. Vīyâ’yėn, in the simplest explanation possible, is one title for the leader of a group. I'm not doing it justice in that explanation. My apologies.
Like I stated before, there will be a gap for a bit. I don't have the next part ready yet, and it's slow going. But I have begun to make some progress! So just be praying that progress continues. We love you all! Thank you so much for reading this far! Thank you so much to our lovely editor @chaysingthesun, who fixes the same silly mistakes that I make over and over again. Eri, let's love!
