‘Still Moves | three’ is due to be released in the near future. The perfect fusion of imagery and music; each SM release is a beautifully produced, and exquisitely presented, piece of visual and aural art. Evocative and other-worldly.

Exorcising Ghosts, Japan (1984)

Exorcising Ghosts is a compilation that somehow manages to include every good track from the last three Japan albums without a single dud. It’s almost disconcerting how there simply isn’t a bad cut here, given how inconsistent most Japan albums were - even the B-sides are so much better than the vast majority of tracks off of Quiet Life and Tin Drum (two albums that are spotty at best, and thickly dislikeable otherwise).

Even odder for a major-label, post-breakup compilation is that Exorcising Ghosts was curated with the help of David Sylvian. On the one hand, having artistic control even over later releases is great. On the other, there’s an element of frustration that underlies my thorough, thorough enjoyment of this.

The fact that Japan, or at least Sylvian, knew which tracks were incredible and yet filled-out their albums with shite is infuriating. Unhelpful for me, who trawled through Japan’s entire discography and only found Gentlemen Take Polaroids not highly overrated. Helpful, on the other hand, for those that haven’t wasted that time: Exorcising Ghosts has everything you could ever want from Japan without the excess and is surely one of the best compilations of the Eighties.
