Experimental Book Concept
Two years ago, I was on a train headed to Toronto and the weather was really bad. It was freezing rain, so the windows were constantly being hit with icy water. It was noisy, but the effect it made was really nice. I spent an hour of that trip taking photos. I’ve been waiting for an opportunity to use them, so I figured this was my chance!
I spent a long time trying to figure out what to do with these. My first idea was to have them in an accordion book and each page could be perforated, so the reader can use them as postcards of some sort. Problem here was that there isn’t much room for text. I also wanted there to be more of a story instead of a collection of these images.
I started to think about the physicality of a train and what it represents. Here I was, on January 4th, 2015, sitting in a very fast form of transportation for 4 hours. Outside of where I was, things were happening. All over the world, events were taking place, and I was sitting in a train.
I decided that a really cool narrative would be to pair these images with others depicting events throughout history, that also happened on January 4th. For example, on January 4, 1643, Isaac Newton was born. I will be organizing these chronologically. The moving of the train is a metaphor for me exploring these events throughout history. The title, Light-Years away, is a reflection of that.
The experimental part comes with what I intend to do with the images of moments from the past. They will be perforated, so the reader can take them out and on the back, they can write what has happened on January 4th for as many years as they would like to.
I would like to try and do this binding shown above. This way, the reader can take the book apart and then use the paper clip to hold their cards together. So, they are experiencing my moment in time and the cards provide them with the opportunity to create their own. This book is not intended to stay as is forever, instead, it becomes a unique timeline for whoever reads it.
I am not sure how great this binding is and how it will effect the reading experience, but I would like to try!
