“Boys, tea’s ready!!!” Effie called up the staircase. It was a miracle they heard her, as they were on the seventh floor! Sirius still couldn’t believe where they would be staying. This castle was something his parents could only dream of owning. It was the type of property handed down through the centuries that the descendants fought tooth and nail to keep.
He ran his fingers over a rich tapestry hung on the wall beside him. It depicted a wild-haired maiden standing before a great army with nothing but her open hands to protect her. He wondered who she was and what had happened to her.
Effie had put on a bit of a spread for them. “I don’t know about you lot, but I’m starving. All that worry while we were travelling,” she shook her head and delicately picked up a cocktail sausage and popped it into her mouth. Remus hurried over to the table and grabbed three, inhaling them before the others could sit down.
“I’ll go get some plates, or this one’s going to gobble everything down before we get a chance,” Monty teased Remus, ruffling his hair on the way by as an entire mini-pork pie disappeared into Remus’s cavernous mouth.
They ate a pleasant meal, every last crumb hoovered up by Remus while Effie and Monty came up with a plan to stock the larder without being spotted.
“We’ll have to do a long round trip, never go to the same supermarket twice.” Monty sighed, his eyes scanning a map of the area.
“At least the car is large enough for a good shop,” Effie added. “We can fill it up to the brim and not have to come back for a long while,”
“We’ll bring too much attention to ourselves if we get too much at one place,”
“Then we’ll have to go to a few in the same area and get what we can.”
Monty nodded, still not looking happy, as he traced roads to and from the little x on the map.
The boys excused themselves, wanting to go explore some more. “If you get lost, shout,” Effie told them, slipping a biscuit into Remus’s hand.
“We won’t get lost, Mum,” James laughed and sped off up the stairs again with Regulus in tow. Remus held out his hand to Sirius.
“Shall we?” he asked, and Sirius happily put his hand in Remus’s.
“I’m sorry for all the bother,” Sirius said as they explored the first level.
“Are you joking? This is the biggest adventure I’ve ever been on. I thought my life was going to be as boring as my dad’s. Sirius, we’re in a bloody great castle on the run from your insane parents who faked their deaths. People write books about shit like this! Besides, I’ve grown quite fond of you,” Remus’s eyes twinkled mischievously at him, and Sirius wasn’t surprised when Remus spun him around and pushed him up against the wall. “You’ve brought light into my life, Sirius. A bit of danger, yes, but you woke me up, and I will always be thankful for that,” Remus leaned in and captured Sirius’s lips.
Sirius melted against him, his leg moving up Remus’s of its own accord. Remus’s hand slid under his bent leg and hoisted him up, pinning him against the wall with his body. Sirius let out a little whine as Remus pushed against him, his mouth devouring Sirius with as much gusto as he’d treated to the delicate French fancies ten minutes earlier. “Shall we go find our room?” Remus asked, pulling away. Sirius reached out for him, his desperate fingers clawing at his back. “I’ll take that as a yes, then?” Remus chuckled. He gently let Sirius down, and they went looking for their room on the top floor.
