Bug Class fun facts 2#
In humans, the sternum is a flat, T-shaped bone in the center of our chest that protects our precious heart, lungs and other important squishy bits. In bugs, the sternum is part of the exoskeleton and is made of something quite different - the cuticle, which is mostly chitins, lipids, and a thin layer of wax, cement and external sensory organs at the very surface. Despite its lack of resemblance to our similarly-named bone, it serves a purpose that is just as if not more important. The impermeability, structural strength of an insect's exoskeleton and the effective water conservation function that it provides is the reason for the success of the insect. If you have ever tried to drown an insect, you will know this. People who develop insecticides basically work to one-up the Great Protein-crosslinked Firewall that is the exoskeleton.
