i think the reason people dont wanna acknowledge gil was a bad person is he is far more likeable than vincent and levi even on the surface so a lot of people like him and theres this strange culture of not wanting the characters u like to be geninune bad people unless ur like, spoonfed a redemption arc.
I mean yeah that’s kind of the point. He is a protagonist. The entire point of his character is that institutional evil isn’t enforced by people who are actively unpleasant or malevolent, it’s enforced by completely normal, decent people who happen to passively benefit from institutional violence.
Along those same lines, Vincent is aware that if he presents himself as obnoxious and threatening, people will be more likely to excuse any violence committed against him. A guy who chokes out his unarmed brother thirty seconds into a conversation where the other doesn’t even yell is at best an asshole. A guy who does the same thing to a brother who we’re led to believe would commit sexual violence against him at least has some rationalization- and after a certain point, it starts to feel like Vincent deserves it.
The entire story and structure of their narration exists to convince you that Vincent is more capable of violence against Gil than Gil is against Vincent, despite there being no real evidence in favor of this and plenty of evidence to the contrary. It isn’t until we see Lacie and Oswald, directly acknowledged as having the same dynamic, where the parallel to Gil clearly commits disproportionate, unjustified violence against the parallel to Vincent, when it becomes clear who actually holds power in their relationship.
Assume Via Tumblr: That you keep to yourself a lot. Maybe an introvert? Yet you are an admirer of those around you, their art and their posts. You're also probably very friendly once one gets to know you.
If describing people extremely accurately based on their tumblr was a super power you would have it.
My friend: yeah I don’t remember the second half of sdr2 or most of ndrv3 honestly
Me, who has the uncanny ability to recall plot details of anything I’ve seen, let alone the detail to which I remember my hyperfixations: wh. What.

"but I don’t think he’s asking to be taken seriously as an activist or a thinker or even as a fashion icon. The hype is real." Maybe not but I think he's benefited from people seeing him that way and I think he understands that he has that reputation and has definitely leaned into that hype when it benefits him.
Of course! Most artists do. They’re interested in selling more records and gaining more popularity (except my favs, dammit), so they’re going to have teams doing the market research and advising the artists on what’s working. It doesn’t make Harry special that he crafts his image. I’m always a bit bemused by this particular criticism because it’s true of all celebs. Happily married Justin is an example of great image rehabilitation for example. Is he happily married? Idk, but appearing to be has been good for his image. 🤷🏼♀️
I typed this with a clementine wedge.
